Starting a 1998 Mercury EFI 225 after sitting for 18 years
Hi Guys, just need some feed back on going about this. Initially tried it without the key by splicing the ignition to ignition wire and touching the solenoid to the hot did not have the magneto wires hooked up.motor turned but it did not start. Talked to a local mechanic told me I needed an ignition switch with a key for it to start. Picked up a harness with key will try again.here is the concern pulled the throttle body off to try to get fuel sprayed inside. Did not know the whole throttle body assembly would come off. So the gasket in between got torn a bit. Buttoned it back up and will try again with the key. Will the gasket torn in between the throttle body and intake cause it not to start? If anyone has insight on this I’m all ears. thanks the help its much appreciated

Vst system will need a good cleaning and inspection/check of the fuel pump. Some oil in the cyls while turning over with plugs out is good. Injectors might need cleaning. It will start with a torn gasket, but changing it out is better. Also remove all old oil from tanks and re prime the oil inj. system with new oil. A long list will include new hoses everywhere and waterpump, gear oil etc...

New water pump impeller and start it on a 100:1 mix. There is a brass drain screw on the vst, loosen that see what comes out. Pump a little fresh fuel through and put the screw back in. Start it and see how it runs before you get all froggy
After your satisfied pull the injectors out and have them cleaned, replace all the clear oil injection hoses and rebuild the pulse fuel pump and new filters.

Thanks Guys for the knowledge. Appreciated the skinny is looking to purchase this motor and was trying to find out what might be hidden pitfalls that could become costly. Eco,fuel pump, injectors. On a
tight budget. Did not want to buy a motor and sink more cash in. The motor sat cause the guy was running a pair he blew the power head on the other one. Never dealt with efi on outboards only on mercruisers in which fuel flow was restricted from gummed up injectors and had to be sent out and cleaned. So a little education is needed. 1) What is a vst and where is it located 2) now having the key what audio sounds can I look for on the fuel pump to determine it bein good or not. Is there a relay that engages the fuel pump where is it located. Is the oil pump manual like the ones on the black max connected to the crank? All of your thoughts are encouraged thanks Guys for walking me through this

vst is a fuel tank on side of engine. high pressure fuel pump is inside. if they didn't drain the vst before storage, you will probably need a new fuel pump.

Check valve on the lower main for being gummed up. Need that one to supply the upper main with oil. Once your sure it's clear and working flood the line with oil.

Not a ideal candidate if on a tight budget unless you can get it really cheap........IMO

Probably going to be a couple hundred just to see if it will start and to get good compression and leak down numbers. You can't just add gas and oil after 18 years of sitting. Then after purchase at least another $1000 in getting it reliable on the boat... service the injectors, replace the reed valves. go through the entire cooling system, new plugs, impeller, gear oil, and any ignition and fuel system parts..... fuel pump alone is $600.

Hunt on Youtube for VST cleanout. Fine screen on the bottom of the HP fuel pump will probably be plugged. Small (really small) screen on out to fuel rail also. I sent my injectors to European Marine. Don is good but it is pricey.
Non- ethanol fuel might help too if you can get it.

Dunno why a couple gallons of gas and a few oz of oil would be a couple hundred bucks. Fuel pumps are far less than 600 dollars. 20 bucks for a pulse pump kit and the high pressure is around 150.
Be sure to replace all of the oil injection hoses under the cowl.
