Top guided rods / bottom guided pistons
I bought a rebuild kit for my Merc 2.4l - 200 86. The boss on the new pistons is wider than on the old pistons. So the rod and rollers can move around.
Did some research and it appears my old pistons are made for bottom guided rods. Looks like I have top guided rods.
So can I convert to top guided just by adding washers so there is no slop or do I need new pistons (or rods).

This might be what your looking for. This is from my 2.5 but I think its the exact same. Then again, maybe not.
If I don't ask any questions, I'll never learn anything.

Merc never made a top guided 2.4. The piston should be loose on the rod.

Just make sure it has the right washers on the sides of the rod on wrist pin side. Bottom guided washers should be stepped like Krazy's. Would still be good idea to post number on rod to make sure it ain't been no swappin going on.

Hey Guys thanks for the replies. It's a TSM rebuild kit, they said they had to modify it to suit the chrome bore 200 I have. It's the only kit I could find that suited it.
The motor is next door (15 minutes away) on my neighbours bench. I'll get back up there over the weekend to find out more. Just has some minor surgery so am on my arse for a couple of days.
It's an old motor and has been rebuild before so who knows what is in it.

Many years ago I used to make thicker top guided washers for this type of application. Heat treated, hardened and ground. They worked great.
Not sure if I still have any but I'll check. Won't be able to look until after the 1st.
