Here are some pictures of my 2002 21' MTR. Ive always built and owned various v-drive grand nationals / flat bottoms, but wanted something a little more user friendly. My father had a 21 MTR with a 300 evinrude when i was very little, so i always loved the cougars. Ended up seeing this one posted on cragslist spring of 2019 and just had to have it. Absolutely love the boat.
Had a 300XS with DBR. Ran 106 on GPS with a labbed 30 pro ET. Ended up breaking a crank sealing ring and ruining the crank this summer. I decided to buy a 300R which will be arriving before end of the year. Looking forward to seeing how the 2 engines compare.

Nice looking 21MTR. The colour scheme pattern is a little different than most of the 21s built. It sounds like you have it running very well too. Post up some photos with the new engine installed.
Thanks

Let's See Your Cougars-Boats That Is!!!
Okay, I have gutted the Cougar and making some changes over the winter. I removed the Capilano helm (which will be for sale) and replacing it with a Zeiger 7" tilt helm, a CharLynn valve and a Verado pump. I am swapping the white Gaffrig throttle and shifters for a polished set. Changing the Gaffrig mechanical trim indicators (which will be for sale) for the Stainless Marine Deluxe trim and jack indicators. I am having all the white billet hardware re-powder coated purple and changing all the switches to purple panels. I posted the photos of what it looks like now and I will post the after photos once it is all back together.
If you are doing changes to your Cougar, please post them up. We could get 50cms of snow tonight, so winter is not over yet.
Thanks
Gary

Nice job! How do you like the Livorsi LED trim and jack indicators. Did you use the electronic sending units? Do you have Bob's jack plates? Post some photos of how you did it as I am about to order the Stainless Marine Deluxe indicators and I would like to know your thoughts on it.
Thanks

Congratulations! I am surprised that you went with an I/O, however it looks great. What was in the boat? It looks like a 496HO and what are you putting in it? Give us more details. By the way, I think you have a Cougar MTR ADDICTION!! What is your secret? Let me know, so that I can talk my wife into letting me buy another Cougar. LOL!!
Thanks
Gary

Hi Gary,
Thanks! It seemed like the right choice to use the LED indicators. On my Lavey I have mechanical so that's what I'm used to. The LED's of course have discreet steps as opposed to the smooth movement of the mechanical. That and the price would be the only complaints. They were much easier to rig because the trim signal is on the NMEA 2000 bus from the engines so all it took was a NMEA 2000 tap for the Lavorsi to get the trim info. The Lavorsi jack input is analog 0-5V but puts out the NMEA codes as trim 3 & 4 onto the bus. That gives me the ability to put them on the Lowrance as an overlay. I didn't end up using it. That was special programming that I had Livorsi do so they are versatile unites and all custom order. I went to great lengths to make a clean actuator for the morse cable on the Lavey with a ramp on the motor side of the jack plate and a roller that pushes the morse cable that comes through the transom. With the Cougar I made my own actuators also because I don't like morse cables for jacks and that was the only thing I could find for mechanical to electronic. I used bicycle cables which I found in stainless with stainless jackets. Both actuators were big projects but I think the are each better than anything available of-the-shelf. The first four pix are the Cougar and the last two are the Lavey.Last edited by luv2gofast; 02-11-2021 at 11:11 PM.
