Just got her position on Marine traffic page. She's stopped west of Point Pelee. She'll do 12.5knots , cruise at 10, I assume it's knots.

!
We normally can unload 3000 ton an hour, and carry between 18,000-21,000 tons of cargo so we can unload usually 6-8 hours. As for speed, we almost always run on 3 engines and that gets us a solid 10.5 knots, if we use the 4th engine (and increase pitch) we will get 12.5 knots. Its rare we run all 4 engines mainly for fuel savings. We run straight diesel in this ship, i do not miss heavy fuel!!! These engines are essentially locomotive engines. We burn roughly 20,000 liters of diesel a day including the generators. We just fueled up in sarnia the other day and took on 325,000 liters of diesel to put in perspective.
As for my position, i am currently working as engine room assistant, and am writing my 4th class engineer ticket this winter in owen sound.
FMP, your right i thought we crossed the lake and were waiting on the ohio side, i now see we tucked in and are on the ontario side still. No word yet when we will be pulling up anchor.
Im sorry for derailing your thread... i guess it was sorta weather related as its holding us up right now

No hold up. Really interesting work, if allowed post a pic of the engine set up and how they connect to the drive. Do you feel 3-4m swell or does she plow right through?

Off Point Pelee would put you between there and Pelee Island, in the Pelee Passage.
Point Pelee has a several miles long peninsula make a perfect local for shelter.
Way cool info.
We stayed in a cottage on the n end of Pelee Island one time, and it had a telescope pointing out the main window, straight at Pelee Passage. Sometimes 4 ships in view, coming from it heading to the mouth of the Detroit River.
Love to see some pixs of your engine room.
PS, for us Yankees, that's 60,810 gallons at fill up and burning 5500 gallons a day!Last edited by Instigator; 11-19-2017 at 09:06 AM.

FMP, if we are heading straight into the waves you can feel the impact when it hits them. If we are going with the waves you feel a little up and down movement. If they are hitting the sides, we rock quite a bit with large waves. The captain will alter his course best he can to keep into the waves to avoid that. My room overlooks the deck and its amazing to see how much it flexes and twists in the bigger waves...it has to or it would break. We were loaded on lake superior a couple weeks ago, following seas and the waves were coming right up on the main deck so figure about 15 footers.
I will try and upload some engine room pics....wifi is terrible so may not work ill see what i can do here.

I must flex, would spook me at first I'm sure. Heading south on Huron with the strong N at your back must be fun.
Engines, displacement bore stroke , #cyl?

Seems to have worked. Your looking from the top deck in the engine room facing aft. You can see 4 engines, the blue boxes are the air intake filters. 2 engines face forward, 2 aft and the gearbox is below the walkway. The half round object you see between the to farther away engines is the cover for the coupling on the propshaft. All the pipes beside the engines are cooling and lube oil pipes and coolers. compressors are to the upper left of the picture...engines are all air start. The control room is behind the 2 farther away engines...ill try and upload a few more here. This is a view from the control room. Each red line on the dash divides up each engine set of gauges. And a view of the gearbox you can see 1 engines input shaft and below it the clutch cover for the opposite engine. All controls are pneumatic. Governors, clutches, pitch control (air over hydraulic) and all gauges are mechanical. Nice change from the fully electronic ship i was on before. Nothing but problems and alarms going off. This one pretty much runs itself.

We have had some wild wind and waves this season so far...and headed south on huron with a strong north wind has happened...following seas are the best conditions in my opinion. As for engines, they are fairbanks morse 10 cylinder (2 pistons per cylinder, no cylinder heads and have a crank in the bottom and top) and 8-1/8'' bore x 10" stroke. They are LOUD! much like a detroit diesel type sound but only 720 rpm instead of 2200. The scavenge blowers make an unmistakable hum. Propshaft turns 120 rpm, and coupled to a 16.5 foot 4 blade prop. Not much bow lift lol
If you go on youtube and search "canadian miner" an engine room video will come up. That ship (gone now) has basically the same setup as this one. some small differences but gives you an idea of the sound and overall setup.Last edited by Charger20sv; 11-19-2017 at 10:44 AM.

Great post. All mechanical vs electronic! 6:1 under driven no stopping that prop.

Shocked at how spotless clean everything is.
Never been below deck on a freighter but but up/close to a ton of them and from our view, they look like beat up old work trucks.
They have one as part of a museum in Toledo and I've been trying to get there for yrs.I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.
