Classic Great Lakes Fall Storm this Weekend forecasted
Forecaster are saying a classic fall storm on the way this weekend. Dropping deep low pressure with all the wind and rain followed by a wind shift from NW on the backside. These are the storms that kick up the big waves. Enjoy it safely if it arrives.

Excellent 😉
We stretched our season on our cruiser last summer, into mid October.
In the last 48 hrs on the boat, we saw water lever to 6" above the cleats on our dock to 3' bellow or 4' total waster level change.
The wind pretty much blew non stop but from opposing directions.
Our boat has an aft cabin w/a hard top, full canvas enclosure and flybridge w/same. My dad would say that it'd make a really good sail boat for going sideways 😉
The last night on the boat, the wind was blowing a solid 40 mph and gusts to 50.
All hitting our boat broad side!
I doubled all dock lines on that side of boat.
After several hrs we heard a loud bang and the boat lunged to starboard and starting drifting away from our dock!
I flew out of the cabin to see our boat blowing toward our neighbors pristine 37' Searay that docks beside us. Not enough time to prevent impact, I grabbed 2 extra dock lines off the bridge and ran to the bow.
We nailed our neighbors boat!
Our boat now wedged sideways in our slip and only way off the boat was off the bow pulpit onto the dock box on land in front of the boat.
Ended up the dock cleat which was through bolted to the pressure treated 2" x 8" planking split the plank in half at the bolt holes!
We were very lucky in our boat hit there's, against rub rail causing minimal damage.
Yep, love that lake 😉I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

We get the same effect with the wind. Powerful offshore Easterlies shoves it over to the Michigan side, then it backs to the WNW and howls. Four foot difference in 24hrs . Last weekend on the 9th we had gusts at 60mph and sustained 40 mph on the outer islands. Absolutely awesome if you can watch it safely and are ready for it.

Growing up on pops boats, weathering storms on the Great Lakes, I too am especially drawn to storms when my feet are safely ashore.
Been in trouble more than once while attempting to drive to the best observation point for the storms effect. I love all the old storm caused ship wrecks I've read about.
1000's just in Laje Erie.
Remember one towed barge that went down in a winter storm and before the crew of the tug could cut the tow, it took the tug down too.I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

By us gale warning issued wouldn't surprise me if it's upped to storm , winds increasing steady to sustained 40 knots by tomorrow and Sunday, gust will be close to 60 . Snow with it .. foot.
They just lowered it to 35, not as strong . A little more to the south over Erie and Ontario, should see the backside 40knots.

Looks to be hitting west end Lake Erie this morning and headed your way.
We live south edge of Ohio and calling for 40 - 50 mph gusts this afternoon.
We almost went to the lake this weekend. We have a favorite water front hotel that is cheap off season. We have a favorite 2nd floor room over looking Lake and that wall of room is all windows.
I sit in a chair and stare out window while mamma watches TV from bed, w/the dogs.
When it's blowing, is a special event.I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

We had rain turn to snow overnight, now just above freezing. Winds from SE 25, hasn't kicked up and come around from NW yet. It looked like it would come across Huron,G Bay but you lucky guys are getting it.

We spend a lot of time at anchor this time of year waiting for wind to die down. Holds us up more then anything else as we cant dock normally if the winds exceed 35 knots. We are headed for lorain ohio right now from goderich ontario with a load of road salt so we will see how that goes when we arrive tonight.
We have a trip across lake superior at the end of the month lets hope it stays decent!

That's interesting, get to go around the lakes. How much HP? Are you one of the ships which provides weather conditions to weather service?

Hey guys our ship is 650 feet long and approx 6600 hp between 4 main engines. They are fairbanks morse opposed piston engines 2 strokes all feeding a single gear box with a single controllable pitch prop. Its called the Algoway....lots of info on google about it. Its a self unloading bulk carrier and we normally take salt from the goderich mine to various places this time of year. So far sandusky, lorain, cleavland, greenbay, milwaukee, chicago, perry sound and saginaw in the last 2 months or so. Getting all the stock piles ready for the wintery road conditions. We also take loads of stone and somtimes iron ore.
One of the mates told me just now we will be going to anchor once we get close to lorain for approx 24 hours due to high wind.
The temp in Goderich yesterday was about 3 or 4 degrees c. I would post some pics but our wifi is painfully slow.

That's great and 6600HP. Perry Sound, I mean Parry Sound the salt docks. How long does it take to off load?
What's your top speed empty,if ever vs full stone?

Way cool.
Four motors driving one shaft/prop.
Always wondered.
So if my Canadian still works....3-4 c equals......in US #s (double it and add 25) is 31 f.
Mr charger, what is your position on that ship?I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
