    Water Separator or Fuel filter?

What is mercury recommending be used between tank and motor?
Old spin on separator or a newer style sealed filter like mercruiser uses?

Try a 33093 Wix forget the high $$ Mercury filter , I have used them for 20 years , you will need to buy an adapter to adapt high pressure female to fuel barb but after you buy it once keep changing it out with purchase of $8.00 WIX ....

You could get away with just the water separator as it will act as a fuel filter as well. I prefer just to have a fuel filter between the tank and my engines on all of my , they change out easy and still catch any water and debris

Water separator first, then the inline high micron filter for the EFI like mercury sells.

I use Racor marine water separator/filters on my outboard 300 SX Skater. Mercury has conflicting recommendations about pre-filters on these motors. I did some additional research and found that Mercury does endorse pre-filters like the high flow Racor's for the 300SX's as optional rigging. They are the 660R models - 10 micron and 90 GPM. No chance of starving the frugal 300SX!

just put a decent 10 micron water separator in line, use 3/8" line and thats that...Every 250xs, 300xs 300X 300PM 250EFI i have rigged which are hundreds of them has had that set up and always been flawless...But running without a 10 micron water sep filter is asking for trouble especially with the **** fuel we have today...Had a customer with a brand new boat and the builder said NO WATER SEPARATOR...well i can tell you within 40 hrs the filter in the VST was clogged to **** and the motor wasnt running right....

Mercury Racing generated a service bulletin for the ProMax series motors prohibiting the use of hull mounted water separators.

I've been using both a water separator and the Wix filter on 3 different 260s for 13 years and almost 500 hours with good results . FWIW .
