Exclamation Coming This Month: The Full Story of the Evinrude E-Tec

This has been an article that I had planned to be published months ago, however as I was working on it, I realized there is just so much more to tell here than I had originally expected. I have probably not researched any product as much as this one, and I learned a great deal about the Evinrude E-Tec platform along the way. What was most stirring was how much that I didn't know about the E-Tec, and most much information about it being discussed is just not accurate, or incomplete.

This will be a very large article, and it is the result of my experience and research with the products, as well as detailed discussions with key people responsible for the E-Tec's vision and development. As I progressed with this project, I became more engrossed in it, because it is not only a truly fascinating story, but also a fascinating product.

I really hope you will all enjoy it. I plan to have it published this month.

    Greg

I got to drive a 300 on a 25 foot tritoon shortly after release, the amount of snort they have from a dig is amazing. The aesthetics are a complete failure, but as far as performance goes I would have no issues owning one. As much the v4 etecs are the shiz for midrange outboards.

Indeed it is! I actually have it "pre-published" on the site now, but you can't see it yet. I am just formatting the article and finalizing the images. I will have it up VERY soon.

    Looking forward to your review.

When I got back into performance boating last year I decided to take the outboard powered route vs. the larger I/O powered offshore boats I used to own. Being a casual onlooker I was convinced the ETec line was where I would land. Then, when it turned out I chose to go the air entrapment route and build a Talon, I ended up with a 300XS rather than re-inventing the wheel.

Although I don’t regret going Black I have no brand loyalty in this space and if I branch out into something more along the lines of a fishing or sport boat (not hyper performance) I would be hard pressed to not evaluate the G2 line. I think some of their innovations take things to a different level. It’s too bad the consolidation of boat builders under corporate umbrellas dictates how these boats are powered. Not the least of which is how Mercury locks up the smaller OEM’s to the point they will lose their dealerships if they rig a boat with a competitive motor at the behest of a customer. It’s akin to restraint of trade but it is what it is.

The sad part is the market for motors designed to run in a surfacing or semi-surfacing mode is so small it’s unlikely Mercury will ever have any significant competition. But it the general performance market where you don’t need something like a sporty lower virtually every side by side test I’ve seen shows the Etec to out perform the competition.
