Today was the first of 3 full days !!.
Its held every year and iv only missed 2 in 7 years !!
The quality of things made had far exceeded anything I could have ever imagined .
Whole cars totally done in carbon any and all structural parts 100% carbon fibre !, suspension including coil springs also some engine parts and transmission castings normally done in Aluminium !!all done in carbon disc brakes etc !! I know there's a huge push going in within the automotive and aircraft industries And as usual not even a mention or a hint of anything at all for the marine industry ,which is sad always ..
One really interesting thing I watched was the machine for laying ribbon carbon strips this is a really important way uses in the aircraft industry for laying the carbon strips in all kinds of different directions !! ORIANTATION !!
This is where even with laying glass the strength gains using just 4 layers in the right direction has unbelievable strength and rigidity ! I learned about the importance of ordination of glass more the 25 years ago while building small surf rescue boats and also the progressive destruction of laminates that wont break straight away and will hold together for an amazing long time !!
Many European ,Indian and even south African people there catching up on the Chinese manufactures .
Something that made a big splash some years back was BASALT fibre !! it properties I feel could be excellent for all and any kind of boats !. Now there's all the stitched fabrics commonly used , are available !!
Its doesn't have the many bad habits carbon has ,is quite a bit stronger then glass !!.
Next on my list of things to be done I must get some samples of the various Basalt fabrics and do some testing of my own !
Its a nice chocolate brown colour that will make a change from the usual white of glass , black of carbon ,and yellow of Kevlar!!
Has anyone realised there's every colour of the rainbow in a huge range of different weaves and patterns and colour combinations and mixes of fibres including silver and gold , not forgetting copper in a few different shades ! !!
