I wasn't thinking so much of hogging out the ports as lightening the reciprocating assembly and doing the angle cut on the intake etc. But stock Drag P/H mightn't cut it for me.
My last rig was a lightweight Mirage RR with a Drag powerhead with 21cc heads, Diamond flywheel and Brucato Intake, on an F1 mid, so I know what they're capable of. But, that rig is now owned by a very tricky friend of mine, who's going to be my competition, along with a built-to-the-hilt, heavily modified Diamond Marine built Drag motor on a lightweight Allison, that's owned by the most resourceful boat racer I can think of. Not to mention S&F member Jerremy Powery (aka "Cayman's Dave Bush") with his OMC powered Quartershot. And Jeremy's a certified OMC mechanic (not to mention a certifiable OMC fanatic ).
So, I'm just trying to make sure I'm competitive, because we don't have classes here - it's a run-what-you-brung kind of deal - and these guys aren't playing...

Sammy not to worry I need to put my hull on a major diet or add a lot of NOS to the Johnrude before I cause any problems for you Drag Merc guys, I plan on changing the hull when I can afford to get something much lighter to be competitive with you guys. I just wish I still had my Burgess tunnel..

Haha. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I bet you got some oceanfront property in North Dakota to sell me too, right?
Try pitching that somewhere else, old friend. I know you!

No but I have a parcel of land on the Bluff I would sell you.....
All jokes aside my Q-shot is a Super Sport layup, Jack himself told me the boat is in the 800 Lbs range bare hull and that's who built the boat so anyone can check with him if there is any doubts about what I'm saying. I can walk anywhere on the deck from the drivers seat all the way back to the transom and not worry about going thru the deck, The STV RR for sure can't do that or the Mirage you owned before...Last edited by jerremy powery; 09-04-2017 at 03:20 PM.

Im just yanking your chain jerremy. I dont doubt what you're saying. The deck in the STV is pretty damn thin, even though Dale had Monty reinforce it a bit when he bought it. I would actually gladly trade off some weight for a stiffer deck, because if I break down I can't even walk back there to the motor to check anything. I was thinking that I might try to at rig the Mod-VP cowling so that it hooks in the back and then uses the bungees in the front, so that if anything, I can pull that off from the cockpit and then walk back through the center of the boat to get to the motor.
BTW: where you been? I can't say the last time I've seen you, which is pretty bad for living on an island this size...

Just to update this thread, I recently acquired a stock 2000 Drag powerhead that a friend of mine had sitting in storage for over 12 years. It only had a couple of hours of running on it. I’m going to send it up to Diamond for them to pull it down and check the bores, and replace anything that needs replacing. I also have an F1 12” midsection with the hydraulic up/down function and an XR6 lower with a Bobs Bigfoot (I think) that was originally done by JC’s I believe. The mid and lower came off of a DR-20 that my friend had that caught fire and burned down. It was the Larry Smith’s old APBA hall of fame hull, actually. So, I believe that I might have most of the parts I need to make myself a pretty radical STV Mod-VP setup. I still need to get a lots of bits and pieces like the steering wings, cowling, etc. any recommendation on those things would be greatly appreciated.
I see that both Bobs and Barsh offers aftermarket cowls, so wondering if anyone on here has had experience with those?

Man, that sucks. So, the only option is an OEM Merc cowl?

Motors looking good..Since you can use your old windshield for a template just buy a piece of polycarbonate sheet and cut one out it will make the bend, I used tinted makrolon .118 thick.

Thanks man. I need to start working on this project soon. Got lots to do to get it where I want it to be.
Got some good news from Marty earlier today that the motor dynoed at 359hp at 8700 on Diamond’ dyno, and made over 350 from 8200 past 9000 rpm. Not sure what heads he has on it right now though. I wanted some ~19cc heads on it, since I only intend to drag race it on race gas.
just looked at his email again and it looks like they ceramic coated my heads as well. These guys are true masters.Last edited by CI STV; 11-30-2019 at 09:18 PM.

Diamond always makes everything into a work of art. We’re actually going to do a full feature on that intake. I”m always happy to see Diamond doing what they do best, which is, make everything uniquely their own creation. Those guys take attention to detail to insane extremes!
