Bring it up. On top end boats we put the motor 1.5” to 1.75” depending on setback. Drag setups were a little lower….1” to 1.25”. Obviously closer to the transom lower the height. I run my boat with a cut down 15” and no jackplate (pretty much as close as you can get the motor to the transom) at 1.375”

Thanks. I knew that the top end guys ran >1.5”, but wasn’t sure what the drag guys ran. I’m running the F1 12” clamp on a custom 3” setback bracket, so I should be able to run what you’re running.
My only worry is that the water pressure will drop below 15psi, since it’s at 17 psi now and it’s very low (<4psi , which throws up a low water pressure alarm on my dash) during the first couple of seconds after planing. It even drops to zero as it comes out of the hole, especially if I trim it in a bit too much, because the nose of the bullet is out of the water at that point, as the boat comes on to plane. You can see what I’m talking about in the video below. BTW: that video was taken on my first outing, and I had the motor down all the way and the data logger recorded 0psi on the launch and 29 psi up top, lol.
So, I’m thinking I may need to take a dremel and cut the inlets back just a little bit to get 15+ water pressure when I raise the engine.

When Wally's son was racing (and winning) lake racer, Wally moved the motor way back, I don't have any Idea the exact inches but farther than I saw anyone else's, he said to me they said It would not work...

Andy Drivers was set up on the transom/15” offshore set at 1.25”……he was somewhat successful lol. I know a lot of guys modified the water inlets, so I’m sure there’s some psi gains there. What cone is on your xr6 case?

Yeah, I’m thinking I’ll start at 1.25” and see how that works. The great thing about the F1 mid is that makes it easy to adjust, lol.
The lower I’m using is a 20+ old JC (I think), with a nose cone that looks like a Bob’s.
    Here’s a picture of it.

I was wondering if I should plug the two side holes (one on each side), and open up the three middle ones.

I seem to recall that the 15” mid has a little bit of setback (couple of inches?) in it, compared to the fishing motors clamp? I wonder how it compares to the 12” F1 mid?

May want to ask some gear case guys like Jason Wolfe but you may want to close in the outside two water inlets to be able to run higher engine heights.

Here’s a pic I just screen-grabbed off Jason Wolf’s FB page. He does some impressive work, by the looks of it. This is what I’m going to do:

I think you will be glad you did. May want to contact Jason for tips he's super nice guy. Make sure you don't have sharp edges around the radius of the holes you leave . Good luck!!

Thanks man, really appreciate the advice. Would love to get him to build me an XR6 case, since I want a 2:1 gear and the one I bought from a vendor on here (Kelly Patrick) turned out to be a piece of junk. The one that I’m using now came off a Triad (Larry Smith’s old yellow APBA Hall of Fame boat) that burned down over 20 years ago. All I did was clean it up, change the oil and water pump and sprayed some paint on it. 95% of the epoxy is original and it has stock gears, carrier, etc. So, it may be living in borrowed time, especially if I raise the motor and it turns 11,000 like it should.

I guess I should add that was on a heavy lake racer boat running 1/4 mile and I believe Andy's was a light boat running a short course set up.

Don't be scared of stock gear configuration. I ran a bunch of nitrous thru them with only one failure. Just remember to crank in gear and don't shift it running and it'll live.
