Setting up STV Mod-VP
So, I picked up my recently acquired STV hull today. It's the hull that Monty used to race after he sold me his Mirage way back when, before he switched to the white Triad.
Over the coming months, I'm going to be setting it up, most likely with a 2.5 Drag powerhead on a 12" mid.
I intend to go right through it and replace all of the cable steering hardware, fuel cell/system, gauges, etc. and set it up for recreation/drag racing.
I've been out of the outboard scene for many years now, and I see that it's becoming increasingly harder to find parts and get any advice for 2 stroke outboards, except for here on S&F, so any advice on setup would be greatly appreciated. The good news is that it looks like there's a lot of badass STVs on here.
Thanks in advance for any helpful tips.Last edited by CI STV; 02-03-2022 at 06:16 PM.

Sweet. My advice would be go with a 280 with 260-drag elctronics over the drag if ya wanna keep cost down. You can add SVS and higher compression heads and be very close to a drag. Also would bolt motor straight to the transom. No jack plate. Best CG on that hull no more added setback. The set back is already built into the hull. Bolt it high as you can and still get water pressure. Get a shiftable 12" mid and sportmaster case. With the MOD VP deck that you have I would mount the fuel cell more forward than closer to the transom like a typical River rocket design.

Thanks Rob. That's the kind of info I'm looking for. I was thinking of using a lightweight adjustable 4-6" setback plate, just so that I can move the engine up and down easier to get it to the optimum x-dimension. I'm pretty heavy myself, so I figure that it will still be okay in terms of balance, lol.
I will mount the cell and battery as far forward as possible though.
I'll also need to get the necessary adaptor plate to bolt the 12" mid to the Sportmaster lower. Does anyone know who makes these things nowadays?
I'll also need to get the steering wings for the 12" mid, which I see Mercury are still selling. Are there other options for those?
I also need to know if there's any other option for the steering pulleys/hardware, other than the Nydahl stuff from Baker (if those are still even available)?
The boat also needs a new windshield and side windows, as the plexiglas is yellowed and cracked. Does anyone still offer these parts for the Mod VP?
Thanks again!Last edited by CI STV; 09-03-2017 at 09:44 AM.

Jack Barsh at Full Throttle Powerboats can make you a windshield. I think Caldwell Racing Technologies makes the adapter for the 12" to sportmaster not sure tho. I know Ive seen them but forgot who. A few guys run them in ODBA and DSRA.
String steering: Not sure if these systems are only for smaller outboards or not but heres a link to look into

I'd stay away from a 6" plate if possible. A 4" would be the largest, transom mount would be optimum for sure. We figure out which two mount holes on the mid are closest and then slot between the two to give you some adjustment room. Usually 1.25"-1.375" above seems to be the sweet spot for river running.

Agreed. However if you must go with a plate Bobs makes a 2.5" convertable manual jack plate thats rated for 300 hp.

Thanks guys. I really appreciate the guidance here.
This is what I found on the cable/pulley steering.

Baker has been around forever, I remember getting stuff from them for my old OMC/Action Marine rig years ago. I'll check to see if I can get what I need from them. I know I've seen fancier powder-coated hardware on the high-end rigs in ODBA. Just don't know who made them and if those are still available?
I'm hoping to go to look at a 2.5 powerhead today. It's apparently seized from sitting for years, but was a low hour motor. Hopefully, all it needs is some new bearings. May send it to JSRE or Diamond to get them to go through it and make it a beast.

Wintech Engine and Machine, have the cable-pulley system, and I had my wing plates made specifically for my river rocket. Give Nick a call. Their number is 262-662-0892.

BTW: I've located a stock Drag powerhead with low hours, but the crank bearings are seized from the powerhead sitting in storage for years. Hopefully the crank is still good and the pistons rings aren't stuck to the bore. My thinking is that I should send this to JSRE and have Jay pull it down and work his magic on it and replace whatever needs to be replaced. I want to squeeze as much power as I can out of this thing.

Not knocking Jay but I'd leave it stock. Factory Drag's from Mercury are really good and capable of winning at the races in any modified class
