    Repaint Cowl

I want to repaint a 1995 mercury black max cowl. Is their a paint stripper I could use that would be safe on that?

I have found the sticker set and im assuming google has the paint code

Paint is Phantom Black isn't it?

As for stripper I'm not sure on that, just sand it?

Phantom Black is correct as the previous poster mentioned. Why do you want to strip it? It's easier to sand it and use the original paint as your base layer.

I just thought it sounded easier to strip it. I will get the heat gun out and try and take the stickers off and then sand it though... Seems thats what is recommended.

Have done a lot of cowls. Be very careful with the heat gun on the decals as if you get the cowl too hot the paint starts bubbling and then the fun has begun! I always use low wattage on the gun. JMO

Don't use a stripper you will melt the plastic, Just sand carefully and use Dupont Imron black and you will never regret it, ever.

DuPont Centari 99 is just as tough as Imron and not as toxic. Restored a lot of Mercs with it. Phantom Black is a lacquer based wimp.

Imron used to be polyicocyanate. When did it change to polyurethane? I remember when Imron labels specified Niosh 95 masks, then something else and then finally full-up air fed suits. Used to watch these guys come into the paint store to buy Imron with dust masks on. They're all dead now.

yep iso, all the good paint was iso. My camaro is in iso, still looks like fresh paint 25 years later
