    1983 Sutphen Super Pacer w/ 350 MAG

Hey all, just picked up this '83 Super Pacer and I love the boat. I'm looking to get an idea of what type of speed this boat can handle, and what power it would need to get it there. New to the water world, so bare with me lol

If this boat is in good shape it can handle anything you can throw at it, or into it. Sutphen builds some tough boats. Post up some pics and show us what you have as a starting point.

Nice old boat. The pacers were a classic design that never seems to get old. The boats Richie Sr built were like tanks with plenty of glass and were darn near indestructible. How much power depends on the money you want to spend. New drive, steering and power could cost an arm and a leg at least. A supercharged big block merc performance power package would make the old boat scream. http://www.mercuryracing.com/sterndrives/ I like the 600SCI for a small (haha) single.

Alright, and as far as a drive goes, it's still got a Gen 1 Alpha on it. I've been told they will hold 500-550 as long as you pop throttle out of water and roll on to the power. I would imagine a 350 can be built to make power close to those numbers. Figuring it would be more simple to not make more modifications than needed. Plus Alpha drives are like a dime a dozen.

Small block, a 383 stroker, 500 reliable hp would be my pick. Low compression and no problem putting a small blower on it. Just get hd internals. Sounds like fun. Seems we just had a member here use a 383 and an alpha? Might give you some pointers.... It was some time back, should have the bugs worked out by now....

That would be awesome! I've got 2 jetskis that run low to mid 80's, so the boat doesn't feel that fast, of course. What type of MPH would you think a 500 HP motor would land me? Just trying to get an idea

In the hi 70's I would guess. Set up, prop and drive height would be critical. What does it run now with 350 hp?

The prop is a 21 and it is beat up BAD, still GPS'd 60-61. That was trimmed up somewhat. All 3 blades have bends in them and are worn out pretty bad. And it's only 300 HP.

Only heard Alpha can handle just over 300hp. But Mercury did have one year that they used a 454/330hp with I think had 1.36gears. "one year" shows the lack of success! That's my 2 cents.

Yeah from what I've seen, it isn't so much the power that breaks the drives, it's the torque, hence the need to work the throttle when out of the water and ease into the power. I'm just trying to gain knowledge from all angles!
