20inch Bass Mid section drilling holes?

My question is what is the purpose of drilling 4 holes the two on each side you see on some 20 inch bass mids just below the exhaust tube? Two 1/4 inch holes on each side on those two parts that stick out? Reason im asking is my new mid doesn't have them drilled but my old one was. Should i drill or not, any benefit or Loss? 225 promax.

The holes on my old one are were I have circled in white. What will drilling some holes there do? anything? Click image for larger version.

if the can is still in the leg it wont do much at all, if its removed you get a little more sound out of them at idle, on the older motors that was the idle exhaust reliefs but on the later style it don't do anything other that what the little hole on the port side with the rubber boot on it does

Exhaust breathes a little better and dumps water a little faster out of the can on holeshot.

All my 20" are that way

OK thanks my 225pm is a 96. Ive debated taking the can out? How much louder would it be with can out? no performance benefit i would imagine. my power head is off right now changing the adapters so now would be the time to do it. Would it effect cooling at all? Do you simply just remove the can thats it? Gaskets and everything line up wont effect water pump ect...?

It just sits in there , pull it out and lighten it up some ! Drill the bottom of the can too if you want . It'll only sound better ! The old mod v p motors came like that !

the can helps keep the heat from the exhaust off the leg, i have seen the paint blister on one, and the paint usually keeps a haze to it, but with the can removed and the bottom drilled it sounds bad azz

I already have the ten holes at the bottom of my mid. I thought about drilling out the upper ones, but afraid to. I can run my hyd jack down and quiet it down a little if need be. Cant really quiet those upper holes.
