It could be a problem sometimes if you were asked to be a guest driver and the boat owner weighed 225 lbs he would set the seat back and trim the boat for his weight if you were my weight 170lbs and you took over the drive you were in trouble by halway down the straight you could only slow the boat down to keep it on the water that all changed with powertrim and lift.

The no 41 boat was a std Shakespeare cat in grp in 1970 Dave Burgess had now left Bill to work for Freddi Miles so no more wooden boats at Shakespeares the older no 38 boat was the same length but had a deeper tunnel as the 41 boat. Both boats were fitted out together myself and Peter Thorneywork had bought the new stinger race engine for £1250.00 from E P Barrus so both boats were tested together Bills new factory stinger had arrived fitted with powertrim and lift all built into the mid section so you couldn`t fit power trim to a std stinger engine the interesting thing you could see straight away was the heads on bills engine had about 200 thou shaved off and when we tested both engines his had a much deeper exhaust note when accelerating you can see now why Ulf Backman driving the no 24 boat would be a little pisssed off but i must add Ari-Deboom driving in that race did finish in third place i was told he had a std stinger engine. We discussed Heidi Blomberg before driving at Chasewater with her husband somebody told me they had never seen a boat do a 360deg and go so high before so Heidi now has a reputation for this.Thinking back now i can understand OMC supplying a std stinger engine made to last a seasons racing so i have to forgive this now.

Thanks Steverino,
I asked Heidi Blomberg a few days ago about the #68 OI class entry but she do not remember she raced in Paris 6 Hours 1970.

I raced kneel down 3 point hydros for 9 yrs and we trimmed them w/our body weight too, by walking/kneeling back and forth on the floor board.
I cannot imagine driving one w/o being able to move our body weight.
Way quicker/easier to control attitude w/trim than by chopping throttle.
Yikes!Last edited by Instigator; 01-01-2018 at 12:23 PM.
I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

I wonder if the teams didnt swap the exhausts around to change the the torque curve for different circuits?
( that engine above is a weird one, still has the original one piece mid)

You are so correct here Steverino and that was the reason Ulf Backman was driving all six hours by himself in Paris 6 Hours 1970.
He was the owner of the #24 boat with the Evinrude V4 Starflite. Ulf was tall and pretty heavy. His co-pilot for the race Ulf Andersson was short and skinny and he could not drive the boat in the race when it was set up for Backman. The fix was Backman drove all six hours.
Ulf Backman was a very good driver and worked for SAS as a commercial pilot.
After the race he sold the boat and got back in to racing 1973.
He purchased a brand new SE class Clerici and OMC gave him the new 65SS..Ulf's plan was to win the big race in Finland same year but lost to a new young, hungry driver with long hair..driving a sister boat.

One more interesting thing is the second picture in the post above.
Look close and the #69 OI boat is Cees Van Der Velden. This must have been before he was part of the Mercury factory team racing in the larger ON class.
Here is a link to the entry list again.http://www.screamandfly.com/showthre...52#post3010352
Another famous driver is missing in the Paris 6 Hour race 1970.. I guess Billy Seebold was not a Mercury factory driver either.
Two pictures of Velden's #69 OI boat.

F1 gearcases were set up to turn left hand they used the bull gear on prop shaft as an oil pump to push oil through a space in the casting to the upper transfer gears and bearings.

More ABBA and Evinrude supporting my boat racing in the seventies. Look close at Björns yellow and blue t-shirt.

Bob Spalding #11 Velden Racing/Carlsberg/Johnson RS V6 3 liter looper fuel injection.
Here you can see the air operated brake cylinders at the rear of the cat. Pretty sure this is from Drammen, Norway 1980
In the second picture Bob is fueling up and next to the fuel tank is the air pressure bottle.
