    Another fact by Peter Switzer..!!

    Peter Switzer

You rarely saw a Switzer Wing with anything but a Mercury on the back. The reason for that was Mercury bought the rights to the mold, so they had complete control over who got to purchase and race the 18' foot Switzer Wing.

in 1968, Bob and Dave Switzer decided to introduce a new 20' foot Switzer Wing model and design. They heard the engine manufactures would be coming out with some new, larger horsepower motors. They designed a new 20' Switzer Wing anticipating that those new motors would be more suitable for a larger boat.

This time, they did not offer Mercury the exclusive rights to the 20' model. Here you see Bob Nordskog and his 20' footer rigged with a pair of OMC outboards. Bob was a well known boat racer, and a successful business man. Bob raced in the Lake Havasu World Champions in this rig and had a top ten finish.

Unfortunately, the 20' foot model was introduced ahead of the larger engines, and many of the 20' foot boats were being rigged with the same engines that were being put on the 18' models. Therefore, the 18' model being a smaller and lighter boat was actually a little faster than the 20' model with the smaller engines. This makes sense.

However, it often proved insignificant in long marathon races when there was rough water, and driver skill played a large role in your success out on the course. Many 20' wings went on to do very well on the race circuit. There were only 20 (20' Switzer Wings produced). It is said that eight of those twenty are still out there in existence.

    OLE’S YACHTS - Bess Emily I & II

Most Evinrude followers know about the Ralph & Frances Evinrude’s yacht the Chanticleer, a Defoe Cruisemaster. Less is known about Ole Evinrude’s yachts - both named Bess Emily. Here’s a bit of history: In 1914, Ole and Bess sold his half interest in the Evinrude Motors Company for then fabulous sum of $137,500, ($4,114,944 today) and agreed not to re-enter the outboard motor business for five years. In 1917, Ole designed a 42-foot ship named the “Bess Emily. Ole, Bess and Ralph set out on the Great Lakes to spend time as a family and hopefully mend Bess’ ill health. Over the years, the Evinrudes continued to cruise the Great Lakes with Lake Huron being a favorite destination.

    • The first Bess Emily designed by Ole Evinrude was built by Grebe in Chicago. This photo is in The Pool, Baie Fin in the North Channel of Lake Huron.
    • The second yacht, the Bess Emily II is believed to have been built by Great Lakes Shipbuilding Corp.
    • The Bess Emily II is shown moored in Killarney Ontario in the North Channel of Lake Huron. (Some sources say the Bess Emily II was later renamed the Bess Emily III. The history is not clear.)

Ole & Stephen Briggs Aboard the Bess Emily II in 1929 – Ole had sold his 50% share in the Evinrude Motors Company to his partner Chris Meyer in 1914. Ole wanted his name back, so in 1929 Ole and Briggs purchased Evinrude Motors and formed OMC consisting of Evinrude, Elto and Lockwood. Ole became president of OMC and Briggs became chairman.

Interesting, looks very serene. Aluminum boats rock! I spent some time working with the Fins in Japan (Nokia). Not a very fast thinking group of guys but they always had good comments about the Swedish girls
