Great lunch today with Pelle Larsson and 50 years of boat racing memories.
Our friendship started back in 1970/71 when Pelle and I worked for Kenty Sjöholm in Stockholm.
The real boat racing started 1972 when I won the Swedish championship race in the UIM Offshore E class with my Piraya/Evinrude.
Pelle prepared his UIM SB class Piraya/Carniti for the famous West Berlin/ Germany 6 hour race. (same year 1972)
Back then I took my Ford Fairlane 500XL Coupe on the ferry from Sweden to East Germany to watch the race. A very scary long drive with a transit pass thru East Germany. We got pulled over by the Police/the Stasi and they checked our paperwork..asked spooky questions but we finally made it to West Berlin.
A cold windy weekend but Pelle Larsson and his co-pilot did finish the 6 hour race in probably the smallest race boat ever.
Over the years Pelle and I raced many different classes like SD-SE-OE-ON and OZ..probably the greatest years was 1979 when Pelle and John Hill won the OE class in the Paris 6 Hour race..but Sture Sjoberg and I got the Paris OE class win the next year (1980)..lots of fun..
Pelle raced the Havasu race but I never got the opportunity to do so..but I did the Rouen 24 Hours and if I remember correct not Pelle.
Today Pelle Larsson have the most prestigious boat racing title you can have in Sweden..
He is the Secretary General for the Royal Motoryacht Club..KMK
Not bad for two old friends for over 50 years..!!

Question is where do you back off and where do you accelerate to use the steering torque on a non ratcheting case?
Vee bottom around the buoys with a LH would be scary..

Mercurys torqued right. I always just installed a bungee on the left steering arm and took the tension up until the torque was even. This made it possible to drive a kneel down v-bottom with one hand.
