I ran V4 Stingers for 5yrs and 2.0V6 crossflows for 2yrs John.In marathon races 6800rpm and sprint races not over 7200rpm.Both engines the same rpm.If Ziggy was still here John you could ring and ask him at what rpm did the welded cranks break hold that thought because that would be great if you could.

The welded cranks didn't break and they had the forged cranks for the next race. But 7000 RPM sound about right. As I recall, Paul Kolb wasn't involved in the race program in 1973. Mike Gaultney (sp) and me are the only ones left of the '73 race group.

I was standing in the Paris pit 1973 watching all 6 hours and the two Johnson V6 engines was flying around the long rough race course at river Seine.
    Way ahead of everybody else..!!

My first Paris 6 Hours 1973 was a disaster..

The first time i heard Paul Kalbs name was at the 1974 Amsterdam 3 hr race he was over for that race and impressed that i drove a privately entered OMC outfit and finished in front of Jim Wagners factory outfits so his full time employment started in jan 1975 at the Earls Court boatshow in London to meet anyone connected to circuit boatracing.

This little Cougar sprint boat was the fastest boat that OMC Belgium had it ran with a 1to1 gearcase made 10mph differance top speed. In one race this outfit broke down and i borrowed the lower unit complete with prop and fitted it on my boat for my next heat i went from 4th fastest to fastest in the last race.

Charlie Strang told me that he had the 121 cube (2 Liter) Johnson Stinger GP V6 designed in parallel with the Rotary Combustion Engine. If I remember correctly, the powers in Paris did not allow the Rotary Combustion engine to race, so OMC used the 121 cube (2 Liter) Johnson Stinger GP V6. At one race where the 121 cube motor broke down, Charlie in a friendly way, tossed a damaged piston from that 121 cube racing motor over to one of the Mercury Folks, knowing that they would examine it very closely. Then Charlie completely pulled the rug out from beneath the Mercury Folks because while Charlie raced a 121 cube V6 motor, he subsequently put a 150 cube V6 motor in production for normal service. What Charlie was after was the Bass Boat Market, which he got. Charlie was one of the greatest people in Outboarding, and especially to outboard racing the world over. Hope that this helps.

Peter Thorneyworks home powerboat club was Fairford in the UK he always held the lap record there and in 1977 Cees Velden came over to race at Fairford with the then new OZ 2.4 injected Mercury engine and set a new lap record.A few weeks later at the next race Peter Thorneywork got his lap record back he had the new OMC 2.3 Looper fitted to his sprint Cougar outfit.
