Its getting better..this is Bo Nilsson and me in Paris 6 hours 1976. We raced together in the famous race..Only bad part we used a Johnson engine cover..not Evinrude.....great memories. Bo is on the other side of the #47 Burgess.

    Evinrude Model 178 “Four-Sixty Racer (4-60)”

Its name is derived from the four cylinders and 60 cubic inch displacement. It’s an “opposed” engine with two rotary valves in the center of the crank (one for feeding the top cylinders and the other for feeding the bottom). Ball and roller bearings are used on the mains and rollers and needles are used on the big and small ends of the rods, respectively. It was originally sold with a large muffler but most of these were discarded when racing to reduce exhaust back pressure. Battery ignition was used for ease of starting and to enable the use of a smaller flywheel (to reduce rotational inertia). The large ports were free-flowing and aggressively timed. Its performance on gasoline was never advertised but peak horsepower was achieved at 5000 rpm. Many of the old racers used methanol as a fuel to increase performance but because the cylinder heads on this motor were integral to the cylinder blocks, it was difficult to raise the compression ratio to take full advantage of the alcohol fuel.
OMC realized the shortcomings of the integral cylinder heads and later brought out “detachable” cylinder heads to make it much easier to modify combustion chamber volumes. The carburetor is a Vacturi Model A-500. The short tower and streamlined lower unit has low-friction bearings on both drive and propeller shafts as well as a water pump with a pick-up on the front of the lower unit, above the gearcase. Two-blade bronze racing propellers were offered by OMC as well as the after-market. One of the best attributes of the 4-60 was its durability, and this often enabled racing victories when vying against faster but less durable competitors. The 4-60 racers were manufactured and sold up to WWII. Because of their longevity and the efforts of after-market parts suppliers, they were used for many years after the war.

1956 EVINRUDE LARK - The stylish 30hp Lark was an electric start, 2-cylinder outboard with forward-neutral-reverse. The “Big Twin”, as it was known, featured a 40.5 cu. in. displacement with a bore width of 3.06" and a stroke length of 2.75" - and reportedly only weighed 129lbs. It’s also a great looking outboard.

There were several variations of the 4 cylinder racer. One was a slight over size due to a measuring/calculation mistake, but it was decided to go ahead with production as an "X" class racer instead of "F". If I recall, the X motor is actually completely different. The second variant came about due to the real 4-60 being out of production. A very similar 4 cylinder 60 cubic inch motor was produced as a stationary engine for fire pumps. The pump drive quill was cut off and the motor was altered to essentially the same specs as the 4-60 and became a reasonably competitive alternate after WWII. Both of these variations are distinguishable from a true 4-60 by their unique carb mount/intake features.

The 4-60 engine was also competitive in automotive racing midget class.

Evinrude - Johnson outboards. Facts, history, racing and future.

In 1974 after the finish of the 6hr Paris race both OMC and Mercury factory’s announced that that would not compete in the Windermere race scheduled for the coming week. I believe this decision was out of respect for the loss of life of Cesare Scotti who was well known and respected in the community as well as the fact the so many top boats were broken in the race.
We decided to go to Windermere and race.
So it was mostly privateers that turned up and raced..
    We won.
