    Cees Van Der Velden.

I have so many good memories from Cees van der Velden. He was a very interesting person in many ways. Raced for him in both the F3 class and the F1-V8. You did never know what was around the corner hanging out with Cees.
My worst memory was his very bad accident in Liege, Belgium 1982.
Was watching when he crashed his Velden/Johnson V8 wide open. Pretty hard to believe he survived and came back to win another race.
Cees was also a little bit of an underdog compare to Renato and Mr Bill..but man he was a lot of fun..

    We all miss you.

Well.. I have heard a few different numbers but more than 250 HP but just under 300HP for the absolute best ones.
Thats extremely good for 45+ years ago now.

    Agreed.

I was a huge fan of Mazda’s domination of the GTU class in IMSA road racing until understanding the tech rules as written for the rotaries.
Im still a rotary fan but once you look inside one and how they are classified........

    BTW, I have that magazine.
As I recall, part of that story was them calling that motor the first 300 HP O/B.

The technical debate lives on, does this engine have the ethical right to compete in the same class against 6 cylinder engines? The 12 combustion surfaces in totality have more cubic inches, than the 6 cylinders do they not?
I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

This is Roger Jenkins in Liege, Belgium 1984.
Roger did switch from Burgess to Hodges for this race. If you look close you can see the Hodges rear boat cowling.
    Thanks Richard Rushen.

I can't even imagine the kind of water you guys were running in...the only thing I can even compare that to would be running on the Chicago river...but that was only a few laps at a time
