Evinrude - Johnson outboards. Facts, history, racing and future.
EVINRUDE & JOHNSON BOATS – THE SHORT STORY - OMC boats were years ahead of their time, featuring an integrated boat, power-plant, instrumentation, and trailer package. The boats were ruggedly built and well-equipped for their day and commanded a premium price. The well-established Evinrude-Johnson-OMC dealer organization sold and serviced these well documented boats. All OMC boats were manufactured in a then, state-of-the art, manufacturing plant located in Waukegan.
Initially, in 1962-63, OMC introduced its first boat, the innovative 17-foot, Harry Hillman-designed, modified catamaran hull, to showcase its first sterndrive the model OMC 480, derived from the 2-stroke, V-4, electric-shift 75-hp outboard. This hull remained in production thru the end of 1966 in sterndrive variations. After 1963, the "17" was marketed exclusively by Johnson dealers, in the USA and Canada.
In 1965, a 14-foot hull was introduced and in 1966, a 19-foot hull was added. Beginning in 1966, all outboard variations were dropped and Johnson and Evinrude models shared common hulls. OMC ceased boat manufacturing at the end of 1970. These "tri-hull" designs were referred to as: Gull-Wing (Evinrude) or Sea-Foil (Johnson).

Bigger is not always better or more fun..!!..
1978 I also raced the UIM SD class in a Clerici/Delicato/Evinrude 55.
Instant success early 1978. The overall winner of Stockholm GP.
Well... All the faster SE/OE class boats did not make it to the end of the marathon race.
The beautiful painted #1 Clerici/Evinrude ended up in the winners circle.
