    I did not write "light years ahead of it's competitors?" but "so far ahead of the competition back them" Willabee..and OMC was far ahead of Mercury in overall outboard sales, rotary racing, most powerful production V6 1976. (200 HP 2.448 Liter. Merc was only 175HP 2.0 liter) Merc used OMC carbs testing the first V6..You know that..OMC racing was also 100% outboards. Mercury racing spent lots of money and time on Offshore/inboard racing.

    OMC was accidentally sent a prototype drawing for the Merc V6 block during development of the program. I think that OMC just quickly tossed an extra pair of cylinders on top of the old V4 so that they could beat Merc’s V6 into production. That heavy pig just so happened to rate at 200 hp:

    135/4=33.75

    33.75x6=202.5

    I think it’s clear which V6 was superior as the Merc design basically lasted until the end of 2 stroke production. The old crossflow V6 OMC was done by the early 90’s.

    I was not only in to OMC racing and started my own outboard business 1975 with help from Evinrude in Sweden/Belgium.
    Our first year was extremely good in sales and the second year we sold more Evinrude outboards than any other outboard dealer in Scandinavia.
    Mercury was not selling good at all in Sweden..Yamaha was the competition.

    Well.."That heavy pig just so happened to rate at 200 hp"..did very good and Micke Frode was the overall winner in Roslagsloppet Offshore race. Beating all the production Merc V6 1977..!!

    Micke Frode’s first overall victory in Roslagsloppet was 1977.

    You obviously don't know the real story. Merc's prototype casting vender included Merc's cylinder drawing with the V-6 blocks OMC had made at the same supplier. Strang had his picture made standing in front of the drawing and sent it to Alexander. Strang even invited Alexander to the certification of the OMC 150 & 175hHp production V-6; and then watch Alex drop his pants when they certified the 200 hp engine.
    Lets not let the competitive blood get in the way of facts.

    Just imagine of OMC has used an even fire crank in the v6 from the get go....

    Well I certainly wasn’t there when any of this happened. I would be interested in seeing a parallel timeline of OMC vs Merc v6 development. Still, the crossflow v4 that the omc 6 was based upon went into production in ‘69. The Merc V6 was a clean sheet starting in the early 70’s and used a much better layout (60* vs 90* odd-fire). I’m not really trying to start a pissing contest, but let’s be real...

    The OMC V6 was designed to give a production expedient answer to the V6 everyone knew was coming from Mercury. The Mercury V6 was a clean sheet design that eventually saw up what - 280 hp in basically it’s original form? Can you crush that power with an OMC V6? Sure, if you’re Stoker or Monty. A 2.0 Merc an be stretched to 300 hp too if you’re the Capt or T-Rex. 10,000 RPM’s!!!

    The Evinrude sales brochure 1976.
    We sold a lot of V6 200 1976 and very few problems. The OMC fully built in powertrim was way better than the Merc V6 design. No transom bolts with drilled holes for the oil lines as Merc used because the powertrim pump must be installed inside the transom. The transom bolts cost a fortune from Merc when you damage the treads.
