Here is a mix of OMC drivers in the SD class 1975.
This is when the max cc was 700 and the Evinrude/Johnson 50 was just under 700 cc.
Not enough power to run with the 3 cyl Archimedes Penta.
One exception Christian Mollgaard won a big race 1975 with a Evinrude 50 and that was the start for people to use OMC in the class.

Luigi Baggioli was also racing in the F1-V8 series 1981/82.
If I remember right he use the same boat seen here with a V8.
I think this is a bigger bore of the 2.448 liter cross-flow.
Just over 2.6 liter.
Early 1983 I purchased Baggiolis V8.

My first Evinrude F1-V8 was a Johnson..here is the short story..!!
Back in the early eighties I was pushing OMC Europe really hard to get in to the F1-V8 racing. OMC’s George Lamy was in charge for finding sponsorship and late 1982 I signed Aspen Racing Jackets from Rouen, France as my main sponsor for the 1983 season.
I was racing F3 during the 1982 season and become a good friend of Luigi Baggioli from Como, Italy.
Luigi was racing F1-V8 in his red #99 Velden/Johnson V8 1982 and told me he was retiring after the season.
He offered me his Johnson V8 for a very good deal after the race season.
I started up my pickup truck in Sweden and drove to Baggioli’s place in Como, Italy and purchased his slightly used powerhouse.
OMC gave me a new Evinrude cowling and a new spare powerhead.
So my #8 Burgess/Aspen/Evinrude was really a Johnson V8 from start, but I turned it in to an Evinrude and enjoyed the F1-V8 series 1983.
Thanks Luigi Baggioli, it was a pleasure doing outboard business with you.
The red arrow first picture is Baggioli and his red #99 Velden/Johnson. The second picture I did found today. Last picture is my #8 Burgess/Aspen/and now Evinrude V8..
EDIT: November 5 2016
This is pretty incredible..I just got this from Luigi Baggioli thanks to FaceBook…

Correct
I saw one run at the Modified Nats in Kingston Tenn when it won D or E mod hydro.
First and only tunnel I'd seen succeed against the three points.
Was part of the motivation for my failed attempt for a tunnel in Mod 20 (Yamato 80s) hydro.
I was also at the Stock/Mod Nats in Dayton Ohio when they showed us the first 45 SS motors.
Id have bought one if I wasn't already burnt out and broke.
They rigged two of them on D Mod hydros and ran an exhibition race.
They 45s gave the stacker Mercs a half straightaway head start.
The 45s caught them going into turn one and passed them all before exiting the turn!
They were bad ass! I was only bummed that they only ran them on 100lb heavier, sit down tunnel boats.
I was rewarded a few yrs later, at same race, in a turn boat, turn one for Formula E hydro.
An epic battle w/a 45 on an old school cab over hydro against a Merc on a current era pickle fork.
The 45 would destroy the Merc on the straight but couldn't make it turn.
He barrel rolled the 45 right in front of us!I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

I wonder if the Mariner 60 was a prop rated engine versus the omc that was crank rated?
It did have more go thats for sure

Hi Olboatman,
The only thing I really know about the Archimedes/Volvo Penta is from 1977 when I raced the UIM OE/F3 class with a Molinari/VP/Konig (attached pictures)
Please click and read my two stories from that racing year. I think you like them
http://svera.se/blogg/racing-histori...7-race-season/
There is many forum with regular Penta stuff.
I like to keep this thread OMC only.
Thanks

corroded everything BUT never broke crank rod or pistons or had electrical issues. Gearbox was a Merc copy including all the parts that were steel and should have been stainless steel.
I'll bet there are 20 OMC's running today for every 1 of them
Idled as rough as guts and noisy. The OMC was much more refined

I would like to see the inside of one of those 44XS motors. Having built a few 44s for SE and SD in my day, I had a few ideas about how to get power from that motor. I wonder if any internal improvements have been made to that motor?

Well..my thinking with this thread was the get the facts out about OMC racing and racing engines so please stick to OMC if possible. There is plenty of Mercury threads at S&F.
OMC used my racing many times in the pretty large Scandinavian outboard market for advertising in the seventies and eighties.
I really like this one..and it is still 100% correct.
It says in Swedish: No one have yet made a copy of this one.. (the OMC F1 racing V8)
This was back when a specific Japanese outboard company did that to OMC V4 engines.
