A friend of mine that just passed away...who's mother did some modeling in her youth, did some Evinrude work. This is her. We forget, or just don't know, just how pretty mothers used to be in their youth...

I always wondered why Mercury didn't start building loopers after 49in OMCs came out. The writing was certainly on the wall.

that segment of hp range was fussy, at the lower end the 4 cyl 50 merc running quality was unmatched, the upper end the 4cyl 80-85 was the same. The three cylinder 60-70 "mid range" was where omc shined with the loopers on lighter easier to push boats. Where merc ****ed up was not taking half the 2 liter v6 and running with it.

While Carl K was alive, they did absolutely EVERYTHING opposite of OMC.

OMC's were RH rotation, Mercs were LH.

OMC used simple, easy, cheap shear pins for props, Carl came up w/the stupid stack of alternating fiber/stanless washers to act as a clutch. Cool idea but drop one washer and youre screwed.
Drop/break a shear pin? Cut the head off a 16 penny nail and off you go.

OMC's cowlings came off w/no tools (post '54), Mercs not so much.

In the book Iron Fist, about Carl K, it talks about the move to shiftable gear cases.
Carl thought only sisses needed neutral/reverse
    Remember the dock busters

The Merc guys bash the OMC cross flows but guess what all their motors were

OMC releases the 45 SS race motor in the mid '80's while the Merc 55H is still being raced so youd think...., one cubic inch difference, they should race in same class??
    Merc told the APBA, no.

Guys were bolting OMC 22 cu in two bangers on Merc 25SS race motor mids and beating them.
    Merc told the APBA, no.

    Insaneo, they did.
It was called the SST 70 class.
They took the guts out of one side of a 2.0 and ran it as a in-line 3.
Couldnt believe it until I saw one.

    It goes on and on.

    Cant make that **** up.

We started the 25SS class with the OMC & once merc was getting beat they passed a rule saying you couldn't mix manufacture parts, they did come out with the 25SS but the OMC could still beat them Out East we had merc towers & gearcases with 16:21 In the mid west they mostly had Champion towers & gear cases, don't recall ratio 14:19 maybe.

I built the first 45SS in my work shop & offered it to the SO commission who told me "if Schubert wants to go fast, tell him to stay with the pro & OPC classes. It is the most popular class in racing today,

    Interesting.
I was just starting racing when the Nerc 25 came out.
Had no idea the OMC was first.

On the Merc saying no more using their parts, I was told by a member here that I was wrong.

    The 45 was bad ass!

I’ve already told the story a dozen times but, I was at the stock nationals in Dayton Ohio the year they introduced the 45 SS.
They ran an exebition race with three boats one was a D Mod Hydro with the 45 on it and the other two were sit down tunnels like we know today.
The Hydro gave the tunnels half of straightaway Headstart and caught and passed both boats by the exit of the first turn! One of the most amazing examples of speed I’ve ever seen.

    Way cool John.

Had no idea that was your baby.
