Tom Glock and John basically invented 25ss. I'm pretty sure I heard from reliable sources that Merc threatened to stop producing parts that supported Stock and Mod if they didn't do away with 25ss and Merc's concession was to build the 402X/35SS motor that failed, but there was also the removal of the "36 Runabout" class that didn't use Mercs either.

What was not true was the rumor that Merc deliberately destroyed the old Quickie dies in revenge for 25ss. Fred Hauenstien told me that way too many high paid dollars were spent dumpster diving looking thru not yet crushed dies in the junk bins in hopes of finding the dies that had accidentially been put in the trash. Then even more engineering hours had to be spent making the new 44XS D Quickie housing. The break even price the 44XS sold for never recouped that investment.

The Merc 25XS did breathe new life into the middle of the Stock line up, but the high price of the 44XS never quite put D Stock back on good footing. Even now, old racers are reluctant to turn loose of 44XS motors for less than they paid for them as the class shrinks to oblivion.

    OPC is MIA in 2019

I read somewhere last year that 2019 will be the final year that Mercury will even sell any of its existing inventory of OPC engine equipment, etc. Their "Mercury Racing" website doesn't even mention OPC or stock outboard products. The closest thing they have for OPC is their 60 EFI 4 stroke. They've made the leap towards 4-stroke high-perf products like Verado, ProXS, ROS, etc using "stock" gearcases like Sportmaster, etc. Finding new parts for SSM, SSM#4, SSM#6 will be very difficult once their inventory is depleted. Merc Marine's business accountants will not allow any more "short run" production of gears, etc if it doesn't pay for itself. Once that happens, any tooling used to make these items will be surplus'd and scrapped.

In 1970 the Merc 500 was the standard powerplant of the E classes. When this motor came out it quickly took over the E production class. !970 was the last year a Merc 500 won Nationals in SE. Three years later Mercury won it's last Nationals in SE with a Merc 650. OMC switched to a much faster lower unit and kept raising the power until Mercury gave up.

The 55hp and 60hp motors big handicap was the giant electric shift lower unit. Once they ditched that thing it was pretty much game over for Mercury in the E classes. I saw this stuff up close and personal.

You are fortunate to have video like this of your races. In 13 seasons of racing I only saw about 30 seconds of myself driving a race boat. Even that short clip was not in a race but in a news story promoting an upcoming race. Also unfortunately it was not in my own boat but in a boat I only raced 3 times. At least I won the race.

The '68 55 HP also had a small decal above the idle reliefs that listed the patent number of OMC's thru-hub exhaust that pre-dated Mercury's claim of inventing it. Merc had recently lost the lawsuit about who invented it and had to pay OMC some royalties.

Nja..1972 was also electric shift on the new 65 hp motor. The new 5hp powerhead was enough for me to win the Swedish E-class championship race same year.
    Raced a Piraya 16 E-152/Evinrude 65.

This must be pretty close to his sad accident in Liege, Belgium when Tom lost his life.
Tom and me had the some ITC sponsor/paint job in the F1-V8 race outside Paris 1984.

I finally find a picture of my #8 boat with the same sponsorship as Tom Percival in the Paris F1-V8 race 1984.

Noah Cooper purchased this 1986 Fountain 31CC cuddy with twin 3.6 V8 Evinrude with second effort racing drives in 1987. The boat was featured on all the magazine covers for Clayton Kirby fishing tournaments and also appeared in Evinrude magazine ads. Noah recalls running his boat on Cape Cod and nothing could keep up! Thanks for sharing Noah!
