Looks like Barry Woods had a very bad day..Not sure where and when but for sure the 3.5 liter V8 looper with fuel injection on a 6 inch mid section.
Thanks Craig Furnal for the picture

This happened to Barry while testing during the morning of the 1986 Toledo Grand Prix, off the race course (proper). Somehow he hit a concrete bridge - a big one.
My most vivid (and hopefully accurate) memory was Barry's appearance that evening at the post-race banquet. Just back from the hospital with his face covered in bandages and a sling on his arm, Barry promptly stepped up to the stage, smartly dressed, and amazingly wearing a huge smile. Everyone in the room was thrilled to see that, once again, Barry Woods had miraculously survived yet another wild crash in his long and successful career - as was Toledo's Mayor, Donna Owens, who was standing beside Barry Caris, Bob DeGrenier and other F1 execs. Never one to shy away from the limelight, Woods then jumped at an opportunity to entertain us all by giving the Mayor a big hug and kiss! Of course the crowd went wild!!

That same weekend in Toledo, Canada's Tom Henderson was driving one of Bob Thompson's Veldens. Well into the race and for several laps, we noticed the powerhead jostling around. Appeared like the engine bracket had broken, but Tom was still able to control the boat. It ultimately stuffed down the straight.

The OMC was stuffed, so the hull stuffed in sympathy.
Ultimately, making the entire rig... stuffed!

Powerabout, the OMC wasn't doing really that well at all.
The post says: "we noticed the powerhead jostling around. Appeared like the engine bracket had broken"
That certainly sounds like the OMC was stuffed, to me!
As a result of the "trim in" position the broken bracket would have caused, it's quite possible that's sole the reason the hull "stuffed" into the surface of the water?? Simply my humble opinion, nothing more or nothing less.
Final result of incident: entire rig... stuffed.

V8 Transom Bracket
Vague memories that OMC was having fatigue failure problems with the F1 V8 transom bracket and they were considering casting the bracket out of steel instead of aluminum. If they switched to steel, the foundry tooling would have to be completely remade. Never did hear how they sorted this out?

The original 6" design has the vertical lift built into the mid in one casting, clever design but it wasnt strong enough so they sliced the lift/swivel part off and machined it from steel and bolted it to the rest.
My guess is they were all changed, I have only seen a few photos of the originalLast edited by powerabout; 06-19-2021 at 07:25 PM.

Old boy..a pretty unnecessary comment and show how little you know about OMC and the racing history.
There is a thread here at S&F for people to trash OMC. Here is a link...https://www.screamandfly.com/showthr...16#post3050516
Please, dont do it on this thread.
Charlie Strang pulled the plug on F1-V8 racing after the 1989 season. The OMC F1-V8 racing started 1981.
9 years of great F1-V8 racing.
OMC filed for bankruptcy way later ( over 11 years)..more exact in December 22 of 2000.
Back to racing history and the London GP 1984.
Barry Woods won in the #35 Molinari/Evinrude V8 over #7 Billy Seebold - Merc T4 and Johnnie Sanders..Johnnie took a dive in his new Burgess powered by the Merc twin powerhead "Wizard".
The first picture show Team Molinari..Renato #18, Kicco Vidoli, #19 & Barry Woods #35
# 6 Rick Frost in his Burgess/Johnson V8. You can see Mr. Bill's T4.
#18 Renato & #7 Mr. Bill and his T4. London GP 1984.
More London GP 1984.
#19 Kicco Vidoli, #18 Renato Molinari, #11 Bob Spalding, #16 Andy Bullen.
The 1984 London GP winner.. #35 Barry Woods Molinari/Evinrude V8.

Barry's Racing Lines
Barry had a knack for using some uncanny racing lines on a course. The bridge story reminds me of a local club OPC race we held on the Willamette River (Willamette Park?) in Portland OR. Barry showed up to "test" with his CCC Evinrude rig. I had never seen a CCC run in person before so this was quite an experience for me. Barry's racing line took up the whole dang river from bank to bank so Barry managing to hit a bridge is no surprise LOL
