Lars, Thanks for posting the timeline of the large OMC motors. There is so much general confusion about these...people who weren't there always getting them mixed up. To further clarify, is the 1978 3-liter looper motor the "727" motor? Any idea about how many might have been made.

The V6 3 liter looper with fuel injection was never sold to race drivers. OMC let the top drivers use the engines to be returned after the season.
I know Cees van der Velden did never understand "to be return to OMC".. ..so he saved one or two. I have been told Greg Jacobsen have one but I have not seen it myself.

Jake posted a few photos of his looper but I am not sure which capacity it was.
One of my buddies was working on the CCC race program in the USA when they were being made, he said sand cast blocks and weeks of hand grinding, that tells me very few were made or ever going to beLast edited by powerabout; 06-20-2017 at 06:40 PM.

It's the 2 liter looper powerabout. The 3 liter looper is a much bigger block.

The first picture is of a OMC V6 cross flow..similar block to the first CCC 2.4 liter, engine (different front) There is no way to machine this block in to a looper. You need a completely different block/casting.
The second picture is the OMC V6 2 liter looper block.

Well the first OMC V6 in Paris 1973 was cross-flow powerabout..

2.0 litre looper
All the 2.0 litre crossflow engine blocks were painted red the same as the Johnson Stinger red outboards the OMC plant at Brugge had 5 in 1976 the drivers that raced them were Peter Thorneywork. Alf Bullen.Steve Pinson.Neil Gregg.Hans Pelster.the first one I raced ran 110mph but Peter Thorneywork ran a small 15ft sprint Cougar with a one to one lower unit that ran 120mph but this was not a rough water boat.Paris OCT 1976 OMC had around 7 - 2.0 litre Loopers for this race sent from the US Pelster tested 1 and they put him the wrong prop on he ran it straight past 10000 rpm and he blew it up in practise.They also built a sleeved down 2.0 litre version of the the 2.5 crossflow engine block.I tested this engine out in practise but they decided not to run it.Paris 6hr race 1976 No 85 was a Cougar boat powered by a 2.0 litre looper Evinrude .The yellow boat was the 15ft Cougar sprint boat powered by a Johnson 2.0 litre crossflow that did often outrun the Merc 2.0 litre injected engines.

Hey Steverino..look close at your picture with boat #85..I added a red arrow..its an inboard..Maybe good old Jackie..!!
The #85 boat with the 2.0 litre looper Evinrude crashed bad early in the race if I remember right.
I also remember all the testing in Brugge before the Paris race 1976. I drove a factory OE boat and Paul Kalb was in over his head with all the boats testing in Brugge.

Was the 73 v6 xflow a production block sleeved down?
So same as the one that came out 76?
