In the USA there was OMC versus Mercury.

In Europe, maybe to a certain degree, there was a sub-culture of national pride (i.e., Italian, British, etcetera) at the races.
However, my short stint in Europe, it seemed to me every driver was about himself. To put himself in the best position to win.

But, I could see Renato telling his fellow Italians that if you want a fair price on a New Molinari Boat, then you need to do this ...

Well..In a UIM European championship sprint race it was two titles..
One for the winning driver and one for the best country. Only five drivers from each country was allowed in a European championship race and points from how those drivers ended up in the race decide the winning country.

Were there regional events where more points were awarded than at local events?

Bob had the knack of finding new records in stock outboard classes where breaking the records were assumed to be impossible. Set ups, rigging, propeller selection, weight distribution, you name it. He was the perfect choice for the Bud Davie world record attempt. Always had me puzzled that they never achieved 200 mph with Bob on the team.

I'm not sure but if I remember correctly they used NOS, but only a burst at mid track. Bob said he had to use the last 1/3 of the track to "land" the thing. Maybe at mid track, the package was traveling at 200 MPH?
