Lars, All, I ask this question with the deepest respect for you guys. You've spent a lifetime on the edge and competing at the highest level to promote the OMC Brand. Thank for all the photographic and video memories -
I've always been a huge Johnson/Evinrude fan having owned 26 different OMC outboards over the last 40 years. While they were extremely reliable, recreational outboards, OMC dealerships could not supply my Hi-Performance needs. Why didn't OMC offer alternatives to the 2.4L Bridgeports with factory CLE's or the even hotter 2.5L Mercs with factory Sportmaster gearcases?
My first Allison years ago was sold as the world's fastest bassboat - a XB2002. Unfortunately, OMC did not sell anything close to a 15" short-shaft, 350 pound V6 ProMax Mercury outboard with Sportmaster gearcase and 95+ mph right out of the box. Even in 2010, you could walk into any Hi-Po dealership and purchase a 280 horse or even a 311 horse, 10,000 rpm 2.5L V6 for drags. Why didn't OMC offer their own high performance options for us loyal customers? The old Stingers of the early/mid 1970's are the last of what I remember as factory competition machines. I don't know of any factory OMC ever made for 85+ operation out of the box.
Respectfully, GordonLast edited by Gordon02; 12-07-2019 at 10:22 PM.

Sunset For OMC Hi-Perf
Even 2nd Effort was not directly tied to OMC (off-spin at best). Jack Leek made it perfectly clear that OMC's racing was for product development and never really for consumer production . What's left of OMC's Hi-Perf effort resides with SeaWay Marine (Seattle WA). SeaWay also bought whatever was left of OMC's European racing inventory (Velden). I'm amazed to see that Mercury somehow continues today with some form of hi-perf stuff with their Verado and V8 Four Strokes. (Yes, Merc finally stepped up to a V8...……...30 years after OMC did). At least the Europeans have managed to adapt production 4 strokes to racing hulls and kept on racing whereas the Americans flat out quit.

Nja..not 100% sure how SE was connected to OMC but when I raced F1-V8 1983/84 and 85 all service and parts was with SE. We could not buy any F1-V8 racing stuff from OMC, only direct from SE. As a dealer we got the Limited Edition V6 and V8 outboards from OMC..not SE.
