I'm surprised there's no race videos with as much of an anomaly that they were.

THE only video taken was footage from a race in Provo Utah and the sound of stock outboard engines was dubbed in. Defintely NOT a rotary.

I think that footage is for Lake Carol, Ill. It was part of a potato chip commercial. Johnny Sanders was driving. There is another one with Bill Muncey talking about the rotary intro but again I'm not sure the sound in real. I found it.

Thanks John, Was just wondering in my own mind how the rotory sounded in relation to the V4/V6 and V8....I can only imagine what your hearing is like these days after having to test these things in a 12x12 room!!! LOL

Do you know if they are running stock EMM/ECUs or "cracked"/ "jail broken" ones to get rid of the rev limiter?

Great question..
If I remember correct BRP refused to help the racing teams with this big issue. One of the reasons the private teams using E-TEC power-heads on the V8 6 inch mid section was forced to give up E-TEC racing..!!

This UIM F3 pure race-engine is for sale Sweden.
The FR-31-M race engine (I believe) was never sold by OMC in USA for the Mod 50 class.

Hind sight being 20/20 it would have been better for anybody who was interested in racing to keep all outboard companies at arm's length when it came to the hardware and not be at the mercy of some pencil pusher. We should have focused on aftermarket mid sections, engine components and propellers. The term "stock" was a myth from the beginning.

Days before OMC went under, I knew a former OMC service school tech that was teaching a vo-tech marine school. I was talking to him one day and he was all excited because he was going to get one of the rotary outboards delivered to the school. One would have to wonder if it would have had a powerhead under the cover or not. Anyway he never got it after his contact told him it was on the shipping dock to be put on a truck. If that is true, that's pretty sad.
