Bought it as "blown" but pretty border line-

Victim is a 1999 2.5 175hp CC block Carb- I bought as "blown" - priced accordlingly- Hung it on a stand and checked compression- expecting one hole to be way down-
what I found was 120, 105 (#4), 120, 120, 123, 128- I was planning on building- However what about decarbon? It is on a stand so running under load not feasible-

Bought from original owner - appears to have never been opened- head bolts look virgin- owner says so -
I think be he just wanted a new motor- I doubt average boater would even notice any power loss from 105 - however he indicated he "limped" back in- I am guessing some other problem - spark- carbs - caused loss of power and somebody saw the the 105 and said "blowed up" . I will run leak down Sunday when we get back from lake house.
What would be the way to de-carbon with it on a stand- I can run it but no way to put a load on it.

Run that piston down to BDC and look in through the plug hole (better to just pull the heads), use an inspection camera if you have access to one. Look for scoring on the cylinder walls.

I would be willing to bet on a broke ring or some aluminum drug in the sleeve from over heat or cold seize. I would check the t-stats..that is if he has any and if they work like they should. Usually a fuel or timing problem will knock off way more than 20 lbs of compression but he might have been a lucky one.

Take the head of and inspect.

If something did indeed break when the engine was last run, more damage is likely to occur if you run the engine.

Very good point - I will do a leak down - then pull the head.

It is blown- cylinder wall damage - transfered aluminum- no damage on top of piston so leaned out, low oil or got hot?
spotted a couple more things - chips on reed- #5 - not cylinder that is down- damage to splines on crank- flywheel was put on in wrong position and torqued down - removed and set correctly - owner insists only work other than work pump/lube was a recall where they changed out flywheel nut.

Chipped reeds - I have several sets of reeds/blocks from 2000 up 2.5s Part number shows to be different 11645 3 for '99 vs 855952T 3 for 2000 up- any chance these are interchangeable?
What about just swaping reeds? What would cause those "chipped teeth" reeds?

I don't see any oil in that cylinder...... how does it look from the front?

When you go back together, go with composite reeds. Chris Carson makes good reeds.................

The reeds on the motor were the 855952t 3 - not 11645 as book said should have been. I have complete set of these in excellent condition- just for curiosity - what does a set of Carson reeds cost?

I am think heat got it as a couple of the wiring harness oversleeves were stuck to side of block high on #1 - not a full melt down -just enough to flatten oversleeve and make it stick.
Also owner mentioned having the water pump done..... I think I know why.

Oil ring gear failed - stripped- #4 needs boring - others ok- crank looks very good- mains look good- couple of rod bearings have a bit of color-
Is anybody offering a bearing "kit" rather than buy individual bearings $$? I have plenty of good pistons/rods. This is a relief port motor- so no point in doing much other than fishing motor.
    Thoughts- Opinions?
