Several co's like livorsi make the mach. trim indicators. Digital i'm not sure. You may be able to adapt the newer style merc digital sender to you older motor and use an electric gauge.

Analog stuff probably available from 'Pennman"
Speed cost money. How fast you wanna go?
I have done so much with so little for so long, I can now do the impossible with nothing!

Save yourself a LOT of money and get a quality indicator and sensor from the Ray Allen Company. Made a small lever to go between the motor / lever / sensor that connects using bowden cable and the rest is simple wiring (12v). The indicator has 10 LED bars. Works great. Sure do. I mounted the sensor portion on brackets that mounted inside the boat slightly behind the transome. The sensor is connected using bowden cable, so it could be mounted most anywhere that it doesn't get wet. The connection to the indicators is a small 3-conductor wire. The Bowden fastners, etc. I believe I sourced at Aircraft Spruce. This set-up has been used for a couple of years now on Rich Luhr's 20' Switzer Wing - Dust'n the Wind. If you want more information just PM me and I'll send you my phone #.

In the last picture the trim indicators are located just above the steering wheel hub (green)

Like this, presents some interesting options.
Notice position sensor is available in .5, .7 and 1.2" travel lengths. Wonder if this could be set up with under cowl position sensor connected to a spring loaded cable attached to a bracket of sorts on my 2.4
Further research required.

Yes, my thinking exactly, position sensor is small enough.
Cowl is an old ModVP type so passing cable with bellows thru flat pan will be easy enough.
This doesn't have to be difficult or complicated... instructions recommend Hobby Wire with Z bend to connect (have some).
Figure I could utilize bicycle type cable, shroud and fittings to a simple bracket on 20" mid can. Business end of cable could be secured to mid bracket via a rare earth magnet. A secondary mechanical stop on cable would allow magnet to disconnect when motor is raised beyond useable trim range (always a problem with non OEM systems).
Won't be out there taking measurements today, we're at the beginning of a 2 day ice storm in these parts.
Ah well, at least the lake is open. There's hope after what seems like a very long winter.
Time to go fire up the back up generator just incase.
Thanks Dan for your comments

Was wondering the same thing.
On the plus side, sensors are inexpensive so a one-time mistake isn't catastrophic.

I would think vibration wouldn't hurt it...it's just a rheostat. I went a different route on my plane....i found a miniature linear actuator for my rudder trim with a built in rheostat and built my own led gauge. I too just built my own mechanical and now am rethinking my system

i used the Ray Allen actuators with the built in indicators in my plane for aeleron and elevator trim. Have contemplated building a rudder trim system, just never done it yet. After building the plane I tend to just do maintenance and Fly it. Seen guys build and not paint before flying. Once flying most never get painted as they don’t want the down time! Getting forced into some changes to do the ADS-B mandated stuff, though.
Contacted Ray Allen Company about using the indicators in a boat. Interesting conversation I had with him. Says the indicator market has dropped quite a bit since glass screens as most of them have the provision for them. Said theirs are not waterproof, as previous poster stated, and not sure how they would hold up. Thinking the actuator would be fine under the engine cowl. Not sure about the indicator when washing the boat.
