Johnson GT200 Powerhead swap
Calling all Johnson GT experts..
I have an 89 GT200 (J200STLCEB) with a blown powerhead, the block is beyond repair. So, my only option is to buy a used outboard which will cost me nothing less than a small fortune, or buy a used powerhead to throw on my lower unit. I found an '87 GT175 powerhead for $450 in good shape, all it needs is a lower unit and the electronics. I was looking at the parts breakdown of these 2 engines and I see that some of the electronics on the gt175 are different from the electronics on mine. Would any of my electronics work on the 175? Would it be worth it to buy the electronics I need for the gt175?

My 87 GT200 had bad stator, dripped and wrecked the timer so i bought a complete new system from CDI it says its for the 87 which it is but its really for the 88 up models. There are a few wires not needed and/or deleted but you now have a more modern set up. I went with the 8600rpm version, but the 6700 version you can save a few hundred bux. I'm no expert by any means but I am pretty sure the stators might be a different size because you have to make sure the stator is for the 86-87. Those are the special years for whatever reason. So i would say yes to your mess. let me rephrase this a bit. Thats if the 175 is the same as the 200 block and flywheel.
If I don't ask any questions, I'll never learn anything.

I'm pretty sure the 175 block won't fit onto your midsection. You'll have to change out the exhaust adapter, or put your gearcase onto the 175.
That may not work either, because you are dealing with a crossflow engine with the 175, and the 200 is a looper. Seems to me these had different length drivshafts.Last edited by 58Evinrude; 05-18-2017 at 09:06 AM.

2 of the crank bearings broke and wore out the journals so new bearings wouldn't even seat in my case

Isnt the 89 a looper and the 87 a crossflow? Thought only loopers in 86 and 87 were 200hp.

Thats right, he'd be farther ahead finding a 1988 or newer looper.

86/7 V6 loopers in 200 and 225
The 175 electronics will NOT work on any year looper, parts can be used but as a whole NO. Exhaust adapter is different, lower unit would work with a shift shaft change, drive shaft change in 92.
88 up loopers use a different flywheel than 86/7 models.
