DRAG 4 vs Merc. PROMAX - Which Has More BOW Lift?
For those that have run both of these props back to back, which one tends to have more bow lift? Mercury Promax (newest versions) or Performance Propellers Drag 4? I want less bow lift. I've read conflicting reviews on both props...some say one has bow lift, someone else says little to no bow lift. Etc, Etc.
Most interested in the effect on a cat/tunnel but would appreciate all comments greatly (bow lift is bow lift, right?)
Thanks in advance.

Hundreds of you all have run Drag 4 - No one has seat time with the Promax Pro or labbed?
Any and all comments appreciated.

Any ideas what a labbed Pro Max would do on a STV? I had a Drag 4 on my Euro and although it was a few years ago when I was "in training" from a driving perspective, I thought the Drag 4 put the boat in a dangerous state interms of stability and control over 70 MPH with just myself on board. Tried driving through it, +/- trim and engine height... none seemed to help. I am now debating between the Pro Max and perhaps a BBlades Blaster. Mt best wheel so far is a stock lightning ET. Even tried a RE3 and the ET was still better - I feel.

This feedback helps because the only point of reference I have with this 21 Lib is the 28 Promax pro finish prop I put on it after powering it...one year's worth of seat time. The Promax is everything you read - great mid range, top speed, and holds well in turns but weak out of the hole (even with solid pvs plugs in). There is a cav ring that supposedly helps with blow out out of the hole which I did not have. I would really have to wind up the 300xs to get up, out, and on plane. If it's a really light rig and you don't mind a little drama at take off, it could be a good choice. For labbed versions make sure you factor in the extra 150 revs it will spin (over 'PRO' version in same pitch) as you're choosing pitch.
I needed to go up at least +2" on pitch so it was a good time for me to try Drag 4.

Hey there, wasvette. I'm currently trying to find the best prop set up for mine as well. I bought a 1998 model 21 last year, and repowered it with a 300xs. I didn't know a lot about the boat when I first bought it except that it was stable, pretty, and fairly fast with the proper setup . I started off with a 28 pitch Bravo 1 with 8 PVS, and I now run a 30 Mazco RE4 that I got a really good deal on. I feel that the boat has way more potential, but I haven't been able to get my hands on a Promax or Drag 4. I have added a bit of weight to my setup with the addition of another size 29 battery, and two 12'' subs with custom boxes. I'm trying to meet between having good performance and being versatile with creature comforts . I have spoke with Randy Corson "Wildman" several times over the past year getting advice with motor height, prop, trim etc... Randy loves the Drag 4 props on the 21 Liberators.

HAZRDS - I too have heard how the Lib's love the Drag 4 wheel so I was really excited to make the change. I have 1.75 gears so my final pitch will probably be different than guys with the 1.62 (is that what you have?). Honestly, after running both Promax and Drag 4, I don't think there is much difference at all. They both blow out some on take off (almost identically) - the Promax props get a bad rap for that but the Drag does the same thing which I shouldn't be surprised because it is an 'over the hub' exhaust design. I haven't had good enough water with a long run to see new top speed however I have already exceeded the Promax 28p by 1 mph...but no surprise as I went up 2" in pitch - so a 30P Promax in my opinion would have produced a similar result.
What do you mean when you say 'feel that the boat has way more potential'? Top speed I'm guessing?
Also, keep in mind, a new Lib will most likely be lighter than an older one if it has any moisture in the transom, etc.Last edited by wasvette; 08-14-2017 at 01:06 PM.

I can add my two cents. I tried a 30" Labbed ProMax and a 28" regular finish ProMax on my 21' Checkmate with a 250 Yamaha. I just looked over my notes. The lab 30" ran 85.8 mph at 5900 rpm.(1:75 lower). Surged like crazy getting on plane, liked to porpoise in midrange, needed + trim more than my Solas, twitchy on top end, I felt it lifted the whole boat well, may have more top end if I felt like hanging on to it longer. 28" ProMax, much better getting on plane, better overall manners than 30", takes a nice set but will porpoise if you lose it, again liked +trim, good midrange acceleration, 84.5 mph at 6000 rpm. In the end I went back to my 27" Solas Scorpion.

Wasvette,
Yes, I'm running the 1.62 setup on mine. Before I added the extra battery and the two subs, I was running around 94 with the modded 28 Bravo 1 and 96 with the 30 RE4 with two people. The hole shot of the Bravo was sub-par, so I used it as a spare. After adding the additional weight I can definitely feel the affect it has on hole shot, and I lost on top end a mph or 2.
I was talking in means of hole shot and acceleration when I mentioned that I felt as if it had more potential. Im going to have my RE4 re-pitched to a 28 to compensate for the additional weight I have added. There is a local shop over where I live that does excellent prop work, so hopefully I can get better low end and midrange out of it.
I'll post as soon as I get a chance to try out the lower pitch.
I may bite the bullet and buy a Drag4Last edited by HAZRDS; 07-09-2017 at 08:42 PM.
