It was a broken "X" when he bought it. I stitched a curtain for a small window, put a sleeve in the block, poked it .015, put a XS crank in it, and fixed the wounded head.
Scott called me after it had a few break-in hours on it and said it was .. "quite peppy"
At the time, "The Captain" was flying cargo to the middle east I believe. I think he sold the boat before they really had a chance to do a "proper prop flogging" on the ol gal.

    J.P. What say ye ..???

"Peppy" sounds like a Gal most would enjoy in these parts. Have the new relations given her a "proper" flogging?

After personally seeing both the red/white 24Skater and that Predator single with fresh X’s running here locally, yes they ran ok but that’s all I’ll give it.
These boats where made to run twins if you want the dance and performance they are capable of running. 2 engines behind sponsons also provide better handling.
That single motor in the tunnel caught a beating even with the center pod from a 36' and if ran deep it did not fly properly or loose.
F-14’s 24, very nice package but was built lighter specifically for a single.

Looks like it might be “Marvelous Marv” Jorgenson’s old boat. There were 3 triple rigs that ran around the Twin Cities in MN. Marv’s Eliminator, Bill’s Eliminator (he still has it, now with 200XS’s I’m told) and Doc’s 24 Skater, all with triples. One of my sled racing buddies took care of Doc’s Skater and said when those three guys were coming across the lake it sounded like a Champ race.

Edit: I forgot to add my buddies now own Doc’s old 24 Skater, but with twins now.

The OP did ask about a 400R though. I don't have dyno sheets at my disposal, but I'm guessing that the 400R might possess the better midrange grunt to push the 24 while loaded or through its hop. TUX, I did wonder about the true tunnel handling with a single being a concern.

He sold the boat before spending the time or money to set it up properly. This is the boat that Chaz is referring to and it was a good bit heavier then a typical 24 skater. The C.G. is also further forward and would require a big setback for a single motor application to work in smooth water. My guess is that with the stroker X on it that we could have gotten to the mid 90s with it if he had done what was needed to make it air up and not just hop.

That was the stone, cold, sober as judge answer ...

Which breaks the following rules :

    1 beer / add 1 MPH

    2 beers / add 5 MPH

5 beers / no ossifer I'm only drunk 2 beers an my bote won't go zat fassst

10 MPH slower than internet posted speed :

My speed prop is at home

    There's gas in the tank

    Too much chop

    Not enough chop

West coast - post any speed you want :

So Cal. belongs to Max Waters / 70 % tax coming sail / row only

Nor Cal. Excess Oxygen emitted from grow houses / deduct 10 MPH

    Az :

Peyote derived numbers will be bumped by internet police

    Texas, Louisana, Alabama, Georgia :

    True indicator

deduct 1 MPH each state above to red line

deduct 2 MPH for each state north of red line

see beer rule for fine tuning

    New York :

AOC/BillDeBlaa 70% vs Canoli Bros. Outboards. boating will be moved underground
deduct 5 MPH from Joyzee speeds

    JoyZee :

15 - 20 MPH faster than the rest of the country

    Florida :

98* degrees 95% humidity year round. Add 10 MPH to stone cold sober speed

Yes, getting back to OP's question.
Even though the 400 maybe sound like a good candidate for a simple user friendly application personally I would not do it. That motor would need to be mounted or ran high if using a jack plate which could make turning a bit challenging being weight will be up high with little water bite just like the 20" V8 was on the 21 Skater.
A simple properly setup pair of 2.5 200's will probably give you the same or very close speed with better performing characteristics.....JMPO!

AZMID....yes, I feel the girth of the 400 mid and LU in the tunnel will probably not do well, I could be very wrong!

Chaz, I see you had to sleep on that response/analysis......
BTW, A nice long feather will certainly tickle that speedo.....

I’m just going to throw out some past history here.

The 24 Skater that Mercury Racing had at Lake X in the late 90’s ran 95 with a 300 on it; don’t know if it was a Pro Max or an X, but either way it’s a benchmark that echos Joe’s statement.

There was also boat tests of the day that said the 24 Skater and 28 Skater each ran 102 with 200’s. Someone will have to back me on this, but I remember reading it.

I think the 24 Skater with a single 400R will run 102-105 with proper propping, propshaft height, and CG. Dragging the extra gearcase with twin 2.5 200’s costs you top speed, but the torque of 5L worth of 2-stroke will beat out the single 2.6L with a windmill on it. Everyone likes to say how heavy the 4-stroke is, but if you’re talking stock 20” engines, the 400R setup should be about 100 lbs lighter in running form.

The Skater has a clear speed advantage over the 23 Eliminator, but may hop without the center pod. I’m pretty sure there’s a 100 lurking in EngineerMike’s setup if he gets the 0.100” hook out of it, since it’s right on 98 right now.
