frozen oil drain bolt on omc gearcase !!!
Trying to undo a oil drain bolt on omc 3 cyl gearcase.
its just not coming undone with a large screw driver ,even with a spanner up by the handle.
would it be ok to use a air impact gun on this ? or would that be liable to crack the gearbox ?
Realy need to get the bolt out and change the oil.
I could take out the gear linkage shaft and drain it that way, but would prefer to be able to drain without taking the gearcase off every time.

Hand impact. Far less likely to strip the flat head.

As stated above, a good hand impact is the way to do this. I have encountered salt water motors where even a big whack on my Snap-On impact would not work. The usual heating trick with an oxy-acetylene torch around the screw did the trick. I assume you have already ordered replacement drain plug washers (or O-rings a appropriate) for when you re-fill ?

Spray several times with PB Blaster and give it some time to work. Patience is key. Take a flat tip punch and place it at an angle in the slot so that it will turn the drain screw counter clockwise when struck with a small to medium hammer. If no budge then spray more and wait.

One thing to check after using an impact driver is the drain plug head under the gasket...had one last year that directly under the slot for the screw driver slot it was protruding into the gasket so when installing a new gasket it was still leaking. The only thing I could think of is that someone used an impact at one time and destroyed the plugs...have added that to my inspection drill when changing g/oil and gaskets.

With the hand impact make SURE ya going in the right direction! Push down on something to make sure. Mine sometimes will reverse direction after whacked, so I check to make sure after every hit.
THEN TOSS THEM SLOTTED junk screws and buy hex head ones and use a Allen wrench. 100% better. New gaskets, and snug and good to go.......

Also don't know if apply yer gearcase, but older Force OB's are NOTORIOUS for the little 1/8th Hex drain in front the lower bullet always frozen in. But the easy way is pull the prop, anode, carrier in yer face now. Lower the motor, and simple take out the lower 2 carrier bolts, and here come the oil out. Drain, new gaskets the bolts, and re fill.
Also no need the massive heat "Red and Green", as propane torch (or Mapp Gas) and heat the screw only, "bust the thread crud". Then a small chisel and tap it loose on the slot end, counter clockwise. It will come out.
Then do the Hex plug, new gaskets (EVERY TIME WHEN REMOVED) and bit sillycone gasket and again..SNUG IT HOME! Been there, done that way to much. No worries..it will be fine. Wish the best.

Lol - yup - life in a shop that depends on salt water customers (this was In Vancouver) meant I often had a "smoke wrench" in one hand and a wrench/ratchet/hand impact in the other. Wearing a welding glove helped
Oh and Robbie is right about checking your impact driver before "whack #2" - mine will switch directions on itself as well sometimes. Buy extra tips too - I'd snap one 1-2x per month.

thanks guys, ive got a hand impact had it about 20 years, it has been a brilliant tool that I always forget about.
got a real good set of bits for it too so will have a go with that.
I always use new O-rings on things like this, ive got hundreds of them, picked them up at work for free ages ago and they are kept in a dark cupboard.

Thats the LAST thing ya want to use..aged O-Rings! Slam it home, and tears/splits. Gonna have a "milky oil" L/U.
Let me put it this way. Everything we make came from the earth, right? And nature will reclaim it in time. Look at simple rubber bands. If why lasted forever?..why do the still make them? Aged and self distruck in 60 seconds.
Quit dicking around and get the real thing. Fast search the net, and heres what ya need and do fiber full coverage gaskets. O-Rings in gearcases, are ancient old think
Found a image of what ya need, and the text even said..
(Oh yeah, don't ya feel like a idiot the tool needed, ya forgot about? Damn age! I got it too! In fact, I have TWO hand impacts..(probably bought another forgetting I already HAD ON!... ...its all good...(more tools the better, IF ya remember!)
Anyway..do this..
Those of you who have OMC outboards, BRP now sells replacement lower unit drain screws that use an allen wrench.
