    Allison trans queston

My son recently bought an older Chevy p/u with the fuel efficient 8.1 and Allison trans. Has about 150k miles. He doesn't know the service history on the trans but wondered if it should be serviced. Our experience with conventional trans has been if it hasn't been serviced ever or in a long time and then do a fluid and filter change, it's a death sentence for the trans. Is the same true with the allisons? Should we service it? Or.... if it works- don't mess with it? Thanks

i agree with the death sentence of new fluid in a varnished up trans. but disagree with your fuel efficient 8.1 statement.

They say that the new fluid will loosen up any deposits or crud and then jazzing it up. I by no means am an expert, therefore the question.

That's correct, trans fluid has a lot of detergents that'll loosen up wear material that is in its happy place, and it'll get into the valve body and clutch pistons and cause them to stick and not move freely resulting in trans damage. Check condition of trans fluid, is it discolored or a darker color and how does it smell. If it's still reddish and doesn't have smell other than trans fluid you'll be ok to change. If it's discolored or has a smell don't mess with it.

Also you could just pull the external spin on filter and empty it to see what it looks like. Remember there are 2 filters on it. Internal and external.
