Here is instruction how to fix problem - no spark. Change big yellow capacitor. Capacitor costs $2, time to repair 1-2 hours. Save $400.Click image for larger version.

The previous repair would last 50+ hours, but if You want forget about problem add ceramic capacitor from 1000 pf, same voltage, parallel to plastic one and forget about repair at all.

How do you safely remove the compound around the capacitor?

I have started to do this repair on my part 0586381 (replaces 0586308).
I see the same yellow cap. I had to drill out the 4 aluminum stand-offs to remove the frame.
To break down the potting compound I soaked the area near the cap in kerosene and it made it easier to pick.
I am about to solder in a ceramic 1000pF 500v cap. but now wonder about re-assembly? Those stand-offs that I drilled may be required for grounding? There is a connector pin that seems to be ground when checking with my meter. Anyone else do this fix and have success? What did you do about the drilled stand-offs?

Prior to trying this fix, I had a faint spark. Now I have no spark at all.
I suspect the stand-offs carry connection to ground.
I also wonder if 1000pF will work for my cap?
Next I will try and repair the connection to the standoffs and put a new 0.68MF cap in.

    Hi thehydes,
Did you succeed in repairing the ignition module? How did you do it?
I had to replace mine on Evinrude 175HP Ficht. I want to repair the removed one and keep it as spare.
    Thanks.

    Ok, thanks.
I will have the unit repaired by one of the companies that do this work: $450 is the cost.
They have the market, good for them, the units are not available anymore.
    Safe boating.

Cool How to open the module safely!!

Dzintars solution worked perfecty for me. I also have a way to safely open the module without damaging it (no metal posts drilled). Since this is an old thread I will not post the solution, because it is a bit leangthy, unless someone asks for it. All props to Dzintars by the way, since he was the reason I could repair two modules for my self. All I did was figure out a way to make it easier.

Really great news. I still have my broken one and would like to repair it if possible. Perhaps a YouTube video would make your lengthy explanation easier? I would appreciate your solution, thank you.

It is not very easy to create a youtube video since I don't have a broken power pack for now in order to illustrate the points I want but I will try to create a pdf with steps. It might take some time though because I am currently studing for my summer exams in university.
