    Lower unit Painting

I have removed all the paint and will use an etching wash before painting but I'm getting conflicting methods of painting.
I'm going to use Interprotect 2 part epoxy and they say I can just put that on right after sanding.
But their directions also showed using their zinc chromate paint first, which they no longer manufacturer.
Should I spray an etching primer first, like Rustoleum Etching Primer or Moeller Zinc Phosphate then epoxy? Moeller doesn't carry the zinc chromate any more.

DON"T PAINT IT!!! If the LU is for a "go fast" send it to East Coast Powdercoating (Bud Conner...member S&F) and have him apply the hi-speed SS coating that should be good for at least 1 -2 MPH. Bud is a perfectionest and you will be real glad you did! I don't have any pics but mine is a piece of art! Gary

Totally agree. And it will stand up far better over time.

I'm getting ready to strip my clamp and can. I have a hand blaster, but unsure of what media to use to blast it.

I see you say glass bead, but at what sort of pressure ?
I have a big tank I made myself (50 gallon drum ) and can get big stuff in there. I will be stripping down a lower unit too.

I have very fine glass beads , I didn't get crushed glass as heard thats not so good. hardly any price difference too.
being in a tank I get to keep the beads to re-use.

I built a cabinet out of a trash can also! I use just enough pressure to strip the paint and leave the aluminum a consistant color. Start at 50-60 lb with a big nozzel.

    sounds good.
I will give that a go soon, need it to stop raining so I can get the electric out to the garage.
I can fit a lower unit in here now as have a hole in the door to poke the drive shaft through.
to stop dust getting out I put a bit of inner tube from a bike on the door where shaft goes through a hole..
I have found some props are hard to blast, the Teflon coated are the worse.
