This was a mandatory installation on BP lower units in order to use reverse

If you look at the plate you will see a small tab pointing to about the 2 o'clock position. On the the big fleetmaster ( 850,1500) lower units the motor needed to be running or the prop turning or that tab could break off when trying to shift into reverse. I got disqualified at Nationals in SG due to this issue.

one of the first things i learned about working on outboards in 1958, was to always have someone rotating the prop, with ignition off or spark plug wires off, while shifting. whether you had a control box or not. this had nothing to do with BPs. i always thought BPs got a bad rap about shifting problems as my 1000BP had over 30 logged hours without a failure. i know some people will say bs, but that is a fact that i cannot prove today, but remains a fact.

    TIMES FOUR

    They were HIGH maintenance--

We ran the entire 1970 season 10/11? races without a failure--

BUT----I rebuilt every unit after every race (except the California races that were 14 days apart)
