Tin boat motor choice 08 Yamaha 2 stroke or 13 Merc 4stroke
Looking at 2 motors for a 16 foot tin fishing boat. Down to a 2008 20 hp Yamaha and a 2013 20 hp Mercury 4 stroke. Looking for long term reliability. Little leery of 4 stroke but no experience with the smaller ones. Opinions or resons to opt for or avoid would be appreciated. Yamaha a little less them Merc but cost is not a factor.

We replaced a 7.5 HP Honda 4 stroke with an 8 HP Yamaha 2 stroke. Best move ever. The lighter weight is much easier to carry. The difference in fuel economy is who cares. Neither burns much gas.

I'm not a big fan of 4 strokes either - I would go with the Yamaha if it is in good shape. The 20 Merc 4S is a nice motor, I've run a couple and they work OK. Take a little more snap on the recoil to fire them up it seems.

New Merc 20 is weak Small gear case , basically a 15 with a bit more, no where near one these. Go Yami on this or new Etec short manual 30, heavier than the yami but a strong good motor.http://www.evinrude.com/content/dam/evinrude/Global/MY2017/Documents/Spec-PDFs/PY17-Ev-Specs_30hp.pdf

For weight saving and portability I would go Yamaha. Solid well built motors that last. Mike

Same here on motor choice...Yamaha 2 stroke if you can find a good one. If your boat can hold a 25 Yamaha is supposed to be releasing there new EFI 4 stroke motor around March of 2017. Supposed to be lighter than the 170 pound tank that they offer now.....just a suggestion if you can wait.

Going with the Yamaha. I know I can fix a 2 stroke. Thanks for all the opinions.

We just got the bulletin in where I work for the new F25 Yamaha today. Will be under 130 lbs and have batteryless fuel injection. All models except one come standard with a pull starter just incase your battery dies for electric start. Also this whole motor is made by Yamaha as in no borrowed electronics from "someone else" which I never understood anyway. Looks to be a killer motor but won't know till we see it.
