First Impression Carbon-Core
My order of 3/4" laminated honeycomb arrived today. Shipping was less than a week, and this was freight! I have not worked with it yet, only inspected and unloaded it. It appears to be very well made, certainly not like something I would cook up in the backyard. LOL It is white so it will be easy to mark for cutting. It's so well finished that it probably needs to be roughed up before attaching glass. The open cells at the edges will need to be puttied up before bedding and I can see this will cause some minor issues to work through. It seems to be at least as rigid as 3/4" marine ply. All in all, it appears to be a very well made product. My only complaint is that I don't 'think' it's quite as light as they claimed. Even so, my best guess (I haven't weighed it) is around 25-30 lbs for a 4'X8' sheet. Considerably less than 1/2 what a sheet of 3/4" marine ply weighs at 80-90 lbs. a sheet. Cross posted to BBC

I don't understand what you mean by "before attaching glass"?
Those are finished, gel-coated, structural panels; not core material... I would think you would have to grind through the gelcoat anywhere that you wanted to make a structural connection?

Not suppose to be gelled. Only laminated with 18oz glass. Not being used as core. Used as stringers, bulkheads, sole and decking.

Ahhh... ok, white pigment in the fiberglass skin: http://www.carbon-core.com/store/pro...panels-sheets/
The ones I inquired about were gel on both sides.

It is a cored panel !! if it has glass each side then it is cored.
And if its smooth and shiny each side need totally sanding or grinding so there is no gloss any where for the glass to stick properlyLast edited by tunnels; 12-02-2016 at 07:00 PM.
Messing round with boats is fun !! the learning never stops ,even after more than 30 years there's always something new happening somewhere ! BUT somethings never change and some problems never go away and just keep reoccurring !!so moved into Composite Forensics , Now that something completely new !!
