    Sport master prop nut kit.

I've got a new sportmaster on a 300 xs. I have been testing props and the nut for the prop shaft is not as firm any longer. I went looking for the prop nut and washers on line and can't seem to find them readily available. Anyone know of an in stock source or a locally sourced substitute?

Part number is 12-840383A 2, any Merc dealer if not in stock should only be a day or so away. Fullers Marine will have in stock.

can I ask exactly what do you mean by "the nut for the prop shaft is not as firm any longer" ?
do you mean its a locking nut and that the nylon is not gripping ? or is it a metal nut and you've rounded it off /
seems a strange thing to say that its not firm .

It is a nylon locking nut and the nylon has gone soft and no longer gripping firmly.

ok now I understand about the not so firm bit.
plenty of better quality lock nuts around than mercury sell, even the normal nyloc are better.
I still think the old castle nuts cant be beat, a good nut would be a nyloc with a castellated top would be the best.

I would be careful using stainless steel nuts on stainless steel prop shaft. Likely to gall one or both, possibly ruining the shaft. That is why the Mercury nut is brass.

These are brass...and identical to Mercury! Thanks..I would never go stainless because of galling!

Here is the response I got about these nuts from the seller................................."They are a gold type of zinc plate on steel." They ARE NOT brass.

Just take a dull chisel at the edge of the nylock area and dent it in.
