E10 for my V6 Yamaha allowed ?
Hi everyone,
As of 01/jan/2017 the standard 95octane fuel will no longer be available In Belgium Europe.
It is replaced by "95 E10", still 95octane but it contains 10% ethanol.
I'm running a stock Yamaha 200hp 2.6L V6 carb 2 stroke from early 90's.
Is my engine capabale of running this 95 E10 fuel ?
What consequences does this 10% ethanol have ?
Do I have to make any changes to my fuel setup... I'm thinking fuel/water separating filters, fuel lines, ...
I'm not prepared to take any risks, hence this question on this tech specialists forum
I can always decide to change for the 98octane fuel instead, which will continue to be available.
Either way, both options will be more expensive for me...
Thanks for help !

I found some interesting info in links below.
Yamaha recommends "If at all possible, do not use E10 fuel"....

Definitely don't run.
Run 98 instead.
I ran some leftover 95 in my lawnmower to get rid of it. Have had to empty water from float bowls twice.Markus' Performance Boating Links:

All we have here is 10% corn. They run fine on it, but install a yammy water sep filter or better yet a racor with the clear bowl and a drain valve.

Yup e10 runs fine. Some times you need to fatten up the idles on some of the older engines to make the idle stronger in gear. Biggest killer is not water its low octane. This fuel these days is losing 1.5 points of octane every 30 days so our 87 e10 needs to be fresh or you will be rebuilding them.

Thanks for all info.
I will run 98octane.

The biggest thing is just don't let it sit for long with ethanol fuel without cranking the motor...carbs (especially Yamaha's) hate ethanol fuel. EFI motors get along with ethanol way better than carb motors do. All of your fuel line better be ethanol rated or you will be not running in short order with Yamaha carbs.

Thanks Markus !
My fuelfilter waterseparating unit works with a spin-on cartridge. Last year I replaced it with a new spin-on cartridge.
"Mercury/Quicksilver 35-8M0061975"
Pre-filled it with fuel, installed it, works fine.
But I'm not sure how this waterseparating thing works though... as this filterunit has no waterdrain. Should be centrifugal I guess.
But does this mean once it's filled with max water it just cloggs and stops the fuelflow ?
Or worse, once it reaches max waterlevel, the water mixes with the fuel again and just goes to the engine anyhow ? This would mean you would have to be quick enough to change (or empty) the filtercardridge. Therefore I can understand if you would run 10% ethanol (which I'm not gonna do) you want to see the waterlevel at the bottom of your filter and have a drain as mentioned above by Capt insane-o and in this youtube video I just found
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjtkpqFWsZo
I'm not sure about the mesh of my filter either, it's not written on the filter but internet learns me it should be 25micron.
Filterbusiness is some serious copy-pasting and even rebranding stuff, but the least you would expect is these that these things mention a mesh and flow spec, dp,...
Could you please confirm my assumptions above ?

If the water is suspended (mixed up) good in the gas then it will sometimes pass through a water separating filter so don't rely on a filter to save the day with ethanol fuel.

I run E10 all the time. Only thing I run. Sometimes making the transition can be a problem. If you have any water or debris in your tank the E10 is going to clean it out and send it toward your motor.
Once you get past that, youll never have a dirty fuel system again.13' Biel tunnel AKA "Flight Risk"
