I was at H&H many times over the next few years after my boat was built. They only had 2 or 3 employees and usually didn't have much going on. I never saw anything bigger than a 21 when I went there. My 21 Liberators take me about 3 weeks just to paint. I usually charge $5k. Materials and paint cost $1400-$1600. That comes out to about $30 an hour. My mark up on a completed boat is 10-12%. I do it more for fun than as a business. Some years I sell 3-4 boats and the last two years I sold 10-12. That's counting used boats.

Im sure superboat would rather build a 30 and get 3 times the amount of money and not much more expense.

no one wants to build small boats anymore, you still have to pay your overhead so you can utilize that overhead for more profitable boats
in 10 years resin has almost tripled, paint ( imron at least ) quadrupled, insurance at least 30%, workers comp, property taxes, permits, etc and so forthRaybo Marine http://www.raybomarine.com/

there are many manufacture's building small boats today, and very profitably, if the reference was the 3 local manufacture's, which all produced a great products, unfortuntly the end product is not the only ingredient in the successs equation, being a boat builder and a successful buisness person are 2 totally distnict entities, marketing, customer service, the ability to interface with the companies most prized posesseion (the customer), lifo, fifo, people, process, product ,essentionally if one of those suffer, the odds of success turn into increased odds of failure........

Bottom line....... Most people dont even want to buy a cheap used 21 superboat for 10k rigged and running never mind 30K then rig and set up!

That has to feel real good having your cheeks touching that fine English wood!
Sure hope you get a nice warm fuzzy feel while sitting...
I'm sure JC would unfortunately struggle trying to sell a new 21 even if he was asking 20k.
Rob, thanks for posting today's actual material increase cost!

Very nice!
Another words the figure you posted is totally irrelevant since it was 30 years ago.
So with today's inflation, the MANY cost to do business and material cost 30k is not out in left field would be my take. Not saying it is cheap but not unrealistic expensive either.

I just looked at some old notes from '2005 when I talked to Prpgression about building me a boat to replace my aging (1st one) 24' Sonic.
The 24' XL (tall deck) OB W/no power, trailer or rigging was approx $53K.
I agree with what others have already said about size.
About '1999 when I first got into the small twin o/b arena, all the builders told me the same thing.
Not much more expense to build a larger boat but profit was much greater on the larger boats.
Try finding anyone building them.
I talked to Active Thunder a few yrs back about a smaller boat and was told same.
They'll all build us one, we'll just be paying for it.
PS, still wish I'd have ordered one of the Progressions!Last edited by Instigator; 11-05-2016 at 07:08 PM.
I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.
