    Transom repair

I answered an add on a speedboat. The owner rebuilt the transom with 2x12 pressure treated wood and fiberglass.
Will glass adhere to the pressure treating?
he says he has done several this way for other boaters.

Run away! Some will argue that fiberglass will stick to really dried out pressure treated plywood but I've never heard of 2"X12" in a transom. As a general rule, no, you don't fiberglass treated wood.

Thanks for confirming what I was thinking. Making sure because the boat has a 75 stinger with power trim. You see I like the older small speedboats because of my budget!
    thanks

All wood and wooden transoms are a problem !!!
Messing round with boats is fun !! the learning never stops ,even after more than 30 years there's always something new happening somewhere ! BUT somethings never change and some problems never go away and just keep reoccurring !!so moved into Composite Forensics , Now that something completely new !!

Every one uses wood and in time have to replace it !!
Make fiberglass transoms never have to touch them for the life of the boat !

You can't just make the transom and stringers out of fiberglass, you need a core material to get the proper weight to strength ratio but in this day and age, with materials like coosa and penski board there's no excuse to continue to use wood regardless what Skater is doing. And this isn't radical new technology. Most high end manufacturers went wood free almost a decade ago.

Why couldn't you make a transom or stringer out of just glass? It would be heavier than a cored panel, but would as tunnels said last 4 ever. I built many boats with a solid glass stringer system. My V-King has a solid glass stringer (box style) I would go as far as to say the majority of production boats now use a pre formed solid glass stringer grid. When designed correctly, a solid glass transom would be very strong, but also heavy. Hence we use cores to save weight. And money....

I guess my comment was too absolute, it's not that you can't make any part of the boat 100% fiberglass, it's that certain parts like transoms and stringers (knees) are traditionally made with coring.

Yes, a cored panel is lighter but the inverse can also be assumed, a cored panel of equal weight is significantly stronger.

Sandwiched panels made with composite materials have roughly the same lifespan of a solid fiberglass panel so why would you not build the components that need the most strength that way?

    Thank you for replying.
Be easy cause I am new at this. The Kona I just got does not have stringers, I also drilled a small hole looking fore core. .250 deep and solid glass. How thick should the glass be over the core, I am concerned to drill deeper. There is a would floor that was not glassed when the previous owner put it in so I know I will have to redo the floor. I would like to get rid of all the wood. I appreciate advice on what materials to use.
I saw Seacast on the net, any feedback on this or are there better alternatives?

This is the Kona. The tag on the transom says it was made in Westminster California.

My plan is to set this boat up for two single barrel seats up front.
I am hoping you guys will tell me how you would rig it up from there.
should the gas tank be in the back or under the deck where evidently a built in tank used to be.
    Thanks
    Jerry

Oh yes you can make boats without cores and you don't need wood anywhere !!! as
in no where at all !! This has been going on for a longtime and even the chinese know better than to use wood for stringers and transoms as they rot out and soak up water and get heavy !
