Mercury Power Tune? Your Experience
Hey guys,
I was picking up some parts for my boat the other day and spoke with a Mercury Tech about the mercuy power tune in a can. He told me its a great thing to do. He said fire it up spray it slowly into the carbs while running and then once the can is almost empty spray it all until the motor dies. Then let it rest for about 30 mins and fire it up. He said rev it up and itll smoke black really bad. Wanted to ask. How bad is bad? Should it not be done in my driveway? I would think on an open lake with people around wouldn't be much better. Also I just have a hose and muffs set up for running in the driveway so never like to throttle it up to high in the driveway in fear of not getting enough volume and pressure of water. What are your thoughts. This motor is an 86' 200HP Black Max. Never had power tune sprayed in it. owned it since 92. I may be WAY overdue. Just want to make sure I am prepared and if there are any concerns I should have on my mind to worry about. Thanks for the help

I do as the instructions say and then let it sit overnight, then run it. Try and launch somewhere that allows you to start up and get on plane fairly quickly. Warm it up and run wot for a few min. Cleans the rings and combustion chambers of carbon buildup. Removes some gunk/old oil from crankcase too.

So I'm gathering its best to do on the water. From what I have heard and read it will be some very thick black smoke? Is this true? Sounds like firing it up in the driveway and running it up to a 4k on the trailer isn't the best idea. It should have some load and full throttle. My concerns are a plume of black smoke following me on the lake.

Will burning this carbon off the piston and rings ultimately help my motor run cooler in the long run. Not sure if carbon build up will make a motor run hotter. It seems like it would because the motor would labor more.

It's not as bad as all that. It's mostly castor oil smoke based from the smell. I like the smell, reminds me of 2 stroke dirt bike smoke. I like you, want a load on my motor when revving past idle. Might change plugs afterward since they may get gunk on them...

I like to get the motor good and hot , then fog it until it smokes , then shut it down. Let it work over night and repeat till the can is empty , then warm it up on the water and run it hard for a few minutes on the lake , then just go for a ride.

Sounds like I will have to wait until I get a chance to get out to the river or lake to do this. I will do it in the driveway a little the night before and then let it sit overnight and blow it out at the lake the next day.

This is pretty much just SeaFoam from the description. Take the plugs out if you want and stick the straw in the chamber and try that but its about the same. If you do this turn the engine over a few times before you put the plugs back .

A lot of mechanics here in my area do it on a hose and never run it hard..... I've had a lot of arguments with them about doing it that way. Ya gotta run it hard a soon as you start it up preferably. I usually take the boat out with a spare set of plugs, fog it then drift and fish for half an hour or so the fire it up and run it hard back to the shop.
