2006 Merc 50ELPT 4S EFI stator or voltage regulator
Have one that doesn't seem to be charging. Went through the service manual troubleshooting for the charging system.
Stator resistance was 0.5ohms and there was no short to ground. The voltage regulator measurements were correct EXCEPT there
was no current in the red wire from the voltage regulator. I found it hard the believe that little 12-14 gauge wire can carry
12-17 AMPS as shown in the Current-RPM chart. Am I missing something here?? The manual specifically states to use the clamp
on current meter on the red wire from the voltage regulator.

Was hoping someone would give me a definitive on the current in the red wire on the voltage regulator.

Check serial #....
at your local Merc dealer, Merc had a recall on volt regs due to faulty regulators causing fires/failures. Last time I checked, Merc wouldn't cover the labor but would the kit to update the regulator, exhaust plate, gaskets and fuse. I know that's not what you are asking..... but why try to re-invent the wheel.

Disconnect the yellow stator wire/wires from the rectifier/regulator and run it on the hose. Check to see if you have AC voltage coming from the yellow wires. If not the stator's dead....if so the rec/reg's dead. Alot of us don't run a regulator on a small amp system, (under 16A unless you're running the engine at max rpm for long distances).
I just a rectifier, which there are many really cheap rectifiers avail. that will do a better job than the factory crud. I run a 40A rated rectifier on a 16A system and have no problems.
A 14Ga. wire will handle the current because it's a very short run!
