Racing Trim pump vs regular trim pump
I'm thinking of getting a racing trim pump for my STV. But nowhere online does it say how much better it is over stock, will i be pleased or not really notice?. Single Ram.
When looking up this number 846859A4 it pops up a variety of the same pumps some say racing, some don't say but claim same as the A4. $399 to $1099 for same pump supposedly.
Same as this one here 843017A03. Some say quicksilver same as... a variety of numbers. I don't think that can be right. It might be the "same" but different, right? $600 to $1300. Quite the spread for supposedly the same pump.
Help please.

Keep the one you have and put another battery on it.

I've always used a Mercruiser pump on the single ram system. A complete pump assem. is pretty cheap on eBay.
You can buy it complete or as I do, just replace the pump itself. The pump gears are 3x the thickness of the outboard's so the volume is increased as well as pressure!
It will be 3-4x as fast but to be honest, it's something you'll have to get used to. You'll have to just bump the trim switch at speed instead of holding it down!
Other option is to run 24v to the stock outboard pump!
Good Luck!Last edited by WillySteve; 09-12-2016 at 10:26 AM.

This is what I run, way faster than factory canister pump. I had to swap over some bracket parts and move solinluds and change two fittings to make it work FYI.
I also run aeroshell aviation hydraulic oil in it as well works very well.
Fast on 12 and really fast on 24

That bob's pump looks really similar to a mercruiser pump, anyone know the differences?

I run the Mercruiser pump in my XR2001. Bought it out of a junk boat for $50. Also use Dexron/Mercon transmission fluid. And yes, it is 3-4 times faster than the stock HP pump. It is also adjustable.

The pressure is different but this can be adjusted.

The approx 1000psi more pressure of the Mercruiser pump is what moves the cyl. faster and I don't think you can get another 1000psi out of an outboard pump because of the much smaller sized pump gears!
I've always stayed with the canister sump as it holds enough fluid for a single cyl setup. There's very little diff in the mercruiser pumps themselves, later models just went to the plastic resevoir from the canister.
If you have a 16amp charging system the faster reaction sure saves the battery!
If you wire the mercruiser pump to 24v it will Rock'n Roll, enough so that you may need push buttons to tap instead of a lever switch!!!!

I would not want to only have 24v trim, with my bobs pump on 24 it moves way to much with one bump of the lever on the big end.
I have 24v up and 12v up/down

unless your doing 1/4 mile,,, the question is, "how fast do you need to get it up" ? circle racing, I can see an advantage, but river crusing,,, why?
most overnite successes usually take at least 10 years

I don't race boats I Fish, and a Mercruiser pump on 12 is all I need and it's sometimes too fast coming down but it sure does save the battery!!!
