Negative Tongue Weight on a 19' Tunnel
Hey guys,
looking for some suggestions on how to add some tongue weight to my trailer. I've got a 19' Bahner tunnel sitting on a tandem axle Hensley Gunter Trailer. The problem is instead of having tongue weight i almost have negative tongue weight because it is an outboard with a setback jack plate there is too much weight behind the axles and the tongue can be lifted with one hand and when the motor is trimmed up the tongue will actually float level without dropping to the ground. So while trailering it bounces up and down a lot and you can hear the slack of the hitch in the receiver slapping around. Because it is a tunnel and sits low and close to the trailer some options are out such as mounting the spare tire up front and I do not want to the move the boat further up on the trailer leaving the skids exposed in the back and making it more difficult to tie down. The axles cannot be moved back any further than they already are either. Any suggestions would be appreciative.

Is the trailer tongue "level" with the ground when it's hooked to your tow vehicle?

yes its level that is the first thing i checked. I have read that if you drop it lower it will add tongue weight but i would prefer that it trailers level not at a downward position and unfortunately the axles cannot be moved back further. That was the first thing I checked.

What about removing the front axle ?
You could run different height tires , 205 front/ 255 rear ....Last edited by Steve-S; 07-14-2016 at 05:54 PM.

Tried that once. It definitely helped but was a pain in the butt to get in and out because they had to be all the way up under the bow. looking for something more permanent or at least easily removable

Tractor Weights
Have you considered actual weights?
Tractor weights come in different sizes, and you can stack them, then remove them when needed. Easily add how ever much weight you need.
Even Plastic coated bar bell weights would work stacked on a pole mounted the the front.
Just some outside the box ideas...but like most here have suggested the correct ways to get proper tongue weight would look better and be a done deal. jmoJames H. W2F a V-King... Want 2 Fly a V-King

VKing Barbell weights wouldnt be a bad idea It wouldnt look ideal but a small pole mounted on the tongue would get the job done.

Here are a few pics of the tongue of the trailer. You can see how little of space there is between the bottom of the bow and the trailer. Also a picture of the back showing the boat is even with the skids. Doing some more looking this weekend though I discovered if I did move it forward about 6 inches the straps could hook on the trailer from inside the rail not over the outside. Something I may try next time I put it on the water is shifting it up and tow it home that way and see what happens.

Not many choices. Move the axles back or move the boat forward. If you could ever find it you could bolt some lead on the tongue. Second option would be some heavy steel plates on the tongue. Sounds like you need about 80 to 100 lbs.

Sometimes you can adjust the leafs to change the load.
You can add longer shackles to the rear axle leafs to reduce load on the front.Azure AZ259, 8.1
